This is the design size chart for everything that is not a plain t-shirt front: hoodies, sweatpants and joggers, hats, sleeves, polos, performance tees, and tote bags. Every dimension is in inches, grouped by garment, with the scaling formula that explains why each one works. For t-shirts, the DTF transfer size chart gives the design width for each shirt size from toddler to 3XL, and the placement guide covers where on the shirt a design goes. This page is about size in inches on the other garments.

How big should a design be on each garment? Quick decision guide

If you have to make a snap decision without referencing a chart:

  • Hoodie front (above the pocket): 11 in. wide × 8 in. tall on adult pullovers; 8 × 6 in. on youth.
  • Hoodie full back: 12 in. × 14 in. adult, 9 × 11 in. youth.
  • Sweatpants thigh logo: 3 × 3 to 4 × 4 in., 8 in. down from the waistband on the front-outer thigh.
  • Hat front: 4.5 in. wide × 2.25 in. tall, centered on the cap front panel.
  • Short sleeve: 3 × 3 to 4 × 4 in. adult, 1.5 in. up from the sleeve hem; 2 × 2 to 3 × 3 in. youth.
  • Polo left chest: 3 × 3 to 4 × 4 in., clear of the placket.
  • Adult t-shirt full front: 11 in. wide × 12 in. tall, anchored 3 in. below the collar; the per-size version is in the DTF transfer size chart.

T-shirt placements not in the size chart

The t-shirt front, back, left chest, and sleeve widths for each shirt size live in the DTF transfer size chart. These are the remaining t-shirt placements, based on a Gildan 5000 / Bella Canvas 3001 size Medium, the industry baseline:

T-shirt placements not in the size chart
PlacementWidth × Height (in.)Notes
Right chest3.5–4 × 3.5–4Mirrored placement of left chest
Full front (oversized)12 × 14 to 13 × 15Modern streetwear sizing
Center chest4 × 4 to 5 × 5 (adult); 3 × 3 to 4 × 4 (youth)Higher than "full front," tighter to collar
Below back collar4 × 1 to 5 × 1.5Tagless brand mark or sizing tag
Toddler 2T–4T front5 × 5Center chest; skip the sleeve, it is too narrow for a clean print

For adult sizes Small through 3XL, most shops keep one adult full-front file and let the shirt scale around it. For 4XL+, scale up to 13×15 in. so the design remains visually proportional. For brand-by-brand blank dimensions, see the adult sizing charts at Bella, Gildan, Comfort Colors, the t-shirt fit guide, and for youth blanks the Gildan shirt size chart guide and Jerzees 29BR youth style guide.

How do you scale a design to the garment? The 3-factor formula

A more nuanced answer for designers and brands setting size standards:

Design Size = Garment Size × Visual Weight Adjustment × Placement Factor
  • Garment size: a Bella Canvas 3001 Medium has a 20-in. chest width; a 3XL has a 30-in. chest width. Designs scale proportionally for branded retail apparel; for promotional and team apparel, they stay constant.
  • Visual weight: a dense, dark, square logo can run 11 in. wide. A light, thin-line illustration may need to go 13 in. wide to read at a distance.
  • Placement factor: chest logos run 3.5–4 in., full front runs 11–12 in., full back runs 12–13 in. Sleeve runs 3–4 in.

Visual Weight Examples

  • A bold black wordmark on a white shirt at 8 in. wide reads strongly.
  • A fine-line illustration of the same horizontal width reads weakly — push to 11 in. wide.
  • A photo print with subtle gradients needs to be at least 10 in. wide to avoid feeling like a patch.

Design size chart by garment type

Hoodies

Hoodies have less visible chest area than tees because of the front pocket and zipper.
Hoodies
PlacementAdultYouth
Hood front (front of hood)4 × 53.5 × 4
Front chest (above pocket)11 × 88 × 6
Left chest above pocket3.5 × 3.53 × 3
Full back12 × 149 × 11
Hood back (back of hood)4 × 53.5 × 4
Sleeve3 × 42.5 × 3
Pocket center4 × 43 × 3

For hoodie blanks, see our Blank Hoodies & Sweatshirts Guide.

Sweatpants and Joggers

Logo placement on sweatpants has become common with brand-led streetwear. The standard placements:
Sweatpants and Joggers
PlacementAdultNotes
Left thigh logo3 × 3 to 4 × 48 in. down from the waistband, on the front-outer thigh
Right thigh logo3 × 3 to 4 × 4Mirror of left thigh
Vertical leg strip2 × 14Running down the outer seam
Lower leg above ankle3 × 34 in. up from the cuff
Back pocket3 × 3Centered on the seat pocket if present

For sweatpants/jogger blanks, see our Blank Hoodies, Sweatshirts & Specialty Apparel Guide.

Sleeves

Sleeve prints are the same width whatever the garment, within the limits of the sleeve itself. These are the figures from the garment tables on this page:

Sleeves
GarmentAdultYouthNotes
T-shirt, short sleeve3 × 3 to 4 × 42 × 2 to 3 × 31.5 in. up from the sleeve hem
T-shirt, long sleeve3 × 11 to 4 × 12Not publishedVertical strip running down the arm
Hoodie sleeve3 × 42.5 × 3Brand wordmarks
Polo / performance tee sleeve2.5 × 2.5 to 3 × 32 × 2Sponsor and secondary marks

Many youth and women's fitted sleeves cannot carry a 3-inch print without bending around the seam; the placement guide covers how far from the hem to set it.

Hats and Caps

A cap front panel takes a 4.5 in. wide × 2.25 in. tall design, centered on the panel. Wider designs wrap the curve of the crown and press unevenly, so a curved cap press rather than a flat clamshell is the right tool; the cap row of the DTF temperature and time chart has the settings.

Polos and Performance Tees

Polo placement is more conservative than tees because the collar restricts vertical space.

Left chest3 × 3 to 4 × 42.5 × 2.5
Sleeve2.5 × 2.5 to 3 × 32 × 2
Back yoke4 × 1 (slim)3 × 1

Logo Sizes for Shirts: Brand-Standard Reference

Many retail brands set fixed logo sizes for consistency:

  • Polo Ralph Lauren-style chest logo: 2.5–3 in. wide
  • Nike swoosh on tee chest: 3–3.5 in. wide
  • Adidas trefoil on hoodie chest: 3–4 in. wide
  • Champion C on sleeve / chest: 2.5–3 in.
  • University-style varsity letter on chest: 4–5 in.
  • Sports team name on chest: 9–10 in. wide
  • Sports team number on back: 8–10 in. tall
  • Sports team player name above number: 1.5–2 in. tall × 8–10 in. wide

Blank shirt dimensions for reference: adult sizes vs youth sizes

For reference, the actual dimensions of common shirt sizes (Gildan 5000 adult and 5000B youth, from Gildan's spec sheets). Other youth blanks run narrower; see youth vs adult sizes for averages across 10 youth styles, and the youth small size guide for youth S by brand.

Blank shirt dimensions for reference: adult sizes vs youth sizes
SizeBody Width (laid flat)Body Length
Adult S18 in.28 in.
Adult M20 in.29 in.
Adult L22 in.30 in.
Adult XL24 in.31 in.
Adult 2XL26 in.32 in.
Adult 3XL28 in.33 in.
Youth XS (5000B)16 in.20.5 in.
Youth S (5000B)17 in.22 in.
Youth M (5000B)18 in.23.5 in.
Youth L (5000B)19 in.25 in.
Youth XL (5000B)20 in.26.5 in.

The printable area on each size — the safe rectangle where a design centers cleanly — is always smaller than the body width. For adult M, the printable area is roughly 13 in. wide × 15 in. tall; for youth M, it is roughly 9 in. × 11 in. Designs should fit inside this area with at least 1.5 in. margin on the sides.

T-Shirt Press Designs: Sizing for Production

If you are running production volume, set fixed design sizes per shirt size and stick to them. The single biggest source of rejected shirts is inconsistent sizing across a run.

Production Best Practices

  1. Build a size template library — one PDF or vector file per shirt size with the design placed at the correct dimensions. Print the template at 100% scale.
  2. Use a heat transfer pillow — a foam pad sized to the design dimensions ensures even pressure on flat platens with collars and seams.
  3. Use a laser-aligned press — see our Iron vs Heat Press: Auto-Press & Laser Alignment Guide for press specifics.
  4. Use a placement ruler — see the DTF transfer size chart and placement guide for the t-shirt ruler workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size a design for a hoodie?

Hoodies have less visible chest area because of the pocket and zipper. Use 11 in. wide × 8 in. tall for the front area above the pocket (adult), 12 in. × 14 in. for full back, and 4 in. × 5 in. for the front of the hood. For pocket-center designs, 4 in. × 4 in. fits cleanly.

What is the best logo placement on sweatpants?

The most common sweatpants logo placement is left thigh, 8 in. down from the waistband, on the front-outer panel. Standard size is 3 in. × 3 in. to 4 in. × 4 in. For vertical leg strips (running down the outer seam), 2 in. × 14 in. is standard.

What size should a design be on a hat?

A cap front design is 4.5 in. wide × 2.25 in. tall, centered on the front panel. Keep it inside that width so it does not wrap the curve of the crown, and press it on a curved cap press rather than a flat platen.

What size should a sleeve print be?

Short-sleeve prints run 3 × 3 to 4 × 4 in. on adult tees and 2 × 2 to 3 × 3 in. on youth, set 1.5 in. up from the sleeve hem. A long-sleeve strip runs 3 × 11 to 4 × 12 in. down the arm. Hoodie sleeves take 3 × 4 in. (adult) or 2.5 × 3 in. (youth).

How big should a logo be on a polo?

A polo left chest logo is 3 × 3 to 4 × 4 in. for adults and 2.5 × 2.5 in. for youth, placed clear of the placket. Sleeve marks run 2.5 × 2.5 to 3 × 3 in., and a back yoke mark is a slim 4 × 1 in. Full-front prints on polos are uncommon because the placket cuts through the design.

What size design fits a tote bag?

A standard tote takes an 8 × 8 to 10 × 10 in. center front design, with a 6 × 6 in. design for a pocket or lower-front placement. A drawstring bag takes 6 × 6 in. Measure the bag's flat panel first, since tote dimensions vary more than shirts.

How big should a back of shirt design be?

For adult sizes S-XL: 11–13 in. wide × 13–15 in. tall, anchored 4 in. below the back collar seam. For 2XL-4XL: 13 in. × 15 in. For youth: 9–11 in. wide × 11–13 in. tall.

Should I size designs in pixels or inches?

Always inches. Pixels are display-resolution dependent — a 1000×1000 pixel file at 72 DPI is 14 in. square; at 300 DPI it is 3.3 in. square. Heat transfer suppliers want physical dimensions in inches plus 300 DPI minimum resolution.
For t-shirt design widths by shirt size and the ruler workflow, see the DTF transfer size chart; for pressing, the DTF heat press settings guide.

This assumes some familiarity with the process — what DTF means fills in the gaps.
