DTF Transfer Placement Guide

Standard sizes and positions for placing DTF transfers on t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and tote bags. Use the interactive diagram to see exactly where and how large your transfers should be for professional results.

Knowing the correct placement — how far down from the collar, how wide across the chest, and where to center your design — is essential for consistent, professional-looking garment decoration.

Placement Best Practices

Measure from the collar seam, not the fold

Always start your measurement from the actual collar seam where the collar meets the body of the shirt — not from the top fold of the collar.

Use a heat-resistant ruler or tape

A standard ruler works for marking, but a heat-resistant tape measure is useful for quickly marking positions across multiple garments.

Account for garment size

On youth or small adult sizes, scale your design down. A 12" wide print that looks proportional on an XL will overwhelm a Small.

Center using the collar-to-hem fold

Fold the shirt in half vertically, aligning the shoulder seams, and press a light crease. This gives you a reliable center line.

Test placement before pressing

Lay the transfer on the garment without heat first to visually verify position. Step back and look at it from a distance.

Use alignment tools

T-shirt alignment rulers, laser guides, or even painter's tape markers on your heat press platen can help you get consistent results across a production run.

Press temperature and placement matter together

A transfer placed over seams, zippers, or pockets may not adhere evenly. Avoid pressing over thick seams when possible.

Mark placement on the platen, not the garment

For production runs, mark your heat press platen with heat-resistant tape to create a consistent placement template.
