DTF is the abbreviation for Direct to Film, a popular way to decorate shirts, hoodies, hats and bags. Here is the short answer, how the process works, and how it compares with other methods.
What does DTF mean?
DTF stands for Direct to Film, a garment decorating method where a design is printed onto a special PET film, coated with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat pressed onto fabric. It works on cotton, polyester, blends, and many other materials, and produces durable, full-color transfers.
How does DTF printing work?
Roland DGA describes the same sequence for its VersaStudio BY2-20:
- Print on PET film. The design is printed in CMYK ink with a white layer on top onto clear PET transfer film.
- Apply adhesive powder. Hot-melt adhesive powder is spread over the wet ink and the excess is shaken off.
- Cure the powder. Heat melts the powder into an adhesive layer on the film. The cured transfer can be pressed right away or stored.
- Heat press. The transfer is pressed onto the garment with heat and pressure, then the film is peeled away.

What can you print DTF on?
Because the adhesive does the bonding, DTF is not tied to one fiber. Roland lists transfers for cotton, polyester blends, denim, nylon and rayon, and Brother describes strong adhesion across a wide range of fabrics for its DTRX100. Common uses:
- T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts in any color (see DTF shirts)
- Polyester performance wear and team uniforms
- Hats, tote bags, denim and canvas
Other meanings of DTF

A DTF transfer is the finished printed film: a full-color design with white ink and adhesive powder already applied and cured. The buyer only needs a heat press to apply it to a garment.
Is DTV the same as DTF?
There is no apparel process called DTV. Shoppers who search for DTV transfers almost always mean DTF (Direct to Film) transfers.
