For most large U.S. school districts, the 100th day of school in the 2026-27 year lands between late January and late February 2027. Districts that started in early August hit day 100 around Jan. 22. Districts that started after Labor Day, like New York City, get there in late February. Teachers dress up as 100-year-olds, kids wear shirts covered in 100 things, and parents look for a shirt that says "100 Days Smarter" about a week before. For a print shop, that adds up to a short, predictable window of class sets, teacher shirts and parent orders. This guide covers how to find a school's real date, estimated dates for big districts, shirt ideas and how to run a class order.

How to figure out a school's 100th day

Day 100 counts student attendance days, not calendar days. Weekends, holidays, teacher workdays and breaks do not count. That is why two schools that start the same week can land on different dates.

The rules behind the count:

  • Most states set a 180-day year. The Education Commission of the States reported in January 2026 that at least 31 states plus Washington, D.C., require 180 instructional days. Day 100 is a little past the halfway point.
  • Some states count minutes instead. Texas replaced its 180-day rule with a 75,600-minute requirement in 2015 under House Bill 2610, so Texas districts set their own day counts and 100th-day dates vary more.
  • Weather moves it. Snow days and hurricane closures push day 100 later, which matters if a shop promised delivery for a specific date.

The reliable source is the school itself. Many elementary schools put "100th Day" on their events calendar or in a January newsletter. When a customer orders, ask for the date the school announced, not an estimate.

Estimated 100th day dates for 2026-27

SchoolStartDates.com, a site that is not affiliated with any district, publishes estimates by counting student days forward from each district's first day. These are estimates; the site itself warns that weather days push the real date later.

The practical read: shops in the South and Southwest get 100th-day orders in early to mid January, right after the holidays. Shops in the Northeast and Midwest get them in late January and February, overlapping Valentine's Day.

How schools celebrate

School district newsletters describe the same handful of traditions year after year:

  • Dress like a 100-year-old. Gray hair spray, curlers, glasses, a cane, a shawl. Many schools ask families to use what they have at home.
  • The 100-item shirt. Kids glue or sew 100 small things onto a plain shirt: pom-poms, buttons, stickers, googly eyes. That needs a plain blank, which a shop can sell as a kit.
  • Counting activities. Ten sets of ten, 100 snacks, 100 steps.

Where it started is less certain. Knox News Today reported in 2024 that the celebration grew out of a 1979 classroom math activity by teachers including Lynn Taylor, who later shared it in a national teaching newsletter. Other accounts differ, so treat that origin as one widely repeated story.

100th day shirt ideas

Original text and art keep things simple, and most of what parents search for is wordplay:

  • "100 Days Smarter" and "100 Days Brighter," with a lightbulb or star
  • "Happy 100th Day" with the zeros drawn as glasses, donuts, soccer balls or wheels
  • "100 Days of Kindergarten" with the class name or teacher's name on the back
  • "Teaching 100 Days of Little Minds" for teachers, plus matching grade-level team shirts
  • "I Survived 100 Days" for upper grades and parents
  • An "old person" shirt: "100 Days Old" with a cartoon cane and glasses, which pairs with the dress-up day
  • A plain-front blank with a small printed "100" in the corner, sold as a kit for the 100-item project

"100 Days Smarter" is used so widely by schools and teacher sites that it reads as a generic phrase. A shop that wants to build a branded line around a catchy slogan should still run a quick search on the USPTO trademark database first. Cartoon characters are a different story: do not put licensed characters on 100th-day shirts. See the licensed character guide.

Running a class order

A class set is a small run with mixed youth sizes, which is exactly what DTF does well:

  1. Collect sizes early. Ask the teacher for a size list two to three weeks before the date. Kindergarten and first-grade sizes run Youth XS to Youth M; the youth T-shirt size chart has measurements by brand.
  2. Scale the print to the smallest shirt. A design sized for an adult chest will wrap the sides of a Youth XS. The placement guide has youth chest widths and placement heights.
  3. Gang the order. One gang sheet can carry the class design in two sizes plus teacher names. The gang sheet calculator helps price it.
  4. Build in weather. In snow states, ship a few days early or deliver to the school office.
  5. Offer the teacher shirt free. Many shops comp the teacher's shirt on a full class order, and that teacher becomes the referral for every other classroom in the building.

The school class and grade shirt ideas guide covers the rest of the school year, from field day to graduation.

When is the 100th day of school in 2027?

It depends on the district. Schools that started around Aug. 10, 2026, reach day 100 around Jan. 22 to 26, 2027. Districts that started in late August land in mid-February, and New York City, which started Sept. 10, is estimated at Feb. 22. Check the school's calendar.

How do you calculate the 100th day of school?

Count 100 student attendance days from the first day of school, skipping weekends, holidays, teacher workdays and breaks. Then add any snow or emergency closure days, which push the date later. Most schools publish the date on their events calendar or in a January newsletter.

What do you wear on the 100th day of school?

The most common traditions are dressing as a 100-year-old, with gray hair, glasses and a cane, or wearing a shirt decorated with 100 small items. Many families also buy a printed "100 Days Smarter" style shirt with the teacher's name or class on the back.

How far ahead should a class order 100th day shirts?

Two to three weeks before the date is a safe window for a class set. That leaves a week to collect sizes and a week to print and deliver, with room for a snow day. In January, a lot of shops are also catching up from the holiday rush, so earlier is better.

Can I put cartoon characters on 100th day shirts?

Not without a license. Characters like Bluey, Pete the Cat or Mickey Mouse are protected by copyright and trademark, and school orders are commercial sales. Original art, like a cartoon "100" with glasses or a star, works just as well and carries no risk.

Where it fits in the DTF Database

January is busy for school shops: see January and February 2027 race shirts and Valentine's Day and Super Bowl shirts for the same stretch of the calendar. Shops that do school fundraisers can also use the Giving Tuesday fundraiser shirt guide, which covers the IRS rules for shirts given for donations.
