Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2027 is Monday, Jan. 18, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's federal holiday schedule, and Black History Month runs Feb. 1 to 28. Those two dates bring a steady run of shirt orders: MLK Day of Service volunteer teams, church and fraternity groups marching in city parades, school spirit days and company heritage events. They also bring one licensing question print shops get wrong: Dr. King's name, image and the "I Have a Dream" speech are controlled by his estate. This guide covers the dates, the rules on Dr. King's likeness and words, the big January events, and design ideas that need no license.

This is general information, not legal advice.

AmeriCorps describes MLK Day as the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, a designation Congress added in 1994. That is where most of the volunteer shirt orders come from: a nonprofit, school or company signs up a crew for a cleanup, food bank shift or build day and wants everyone in the same color.

Dr. King's name, image and words are licensed

Two court cases explain why a shop should not print Dr. King's portrait or the text of his speeches on a shirt for sale without permission.

The "I Have a Dream" speech is under copyright. Dr. King registered the speech for copyright in 1963. In Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr., Inc. v. CBS, Inc. (1999), the Eleventh Circuit held that delivering the speech to a huge crowd at the March on Washington was a performance, not a "general publication," so it did not put the speech in the public domain. The case went back to the trial court, and the parties settled in 2000. The estate has licensed uses of the speech ever since. His likeness is protected after death. In Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Change v. American Heritage Products (1982), the Supreme Court of Georgia recognized a right of publicity that survives death and can pass to heirs. The case involved a company selling plastic busts of Dr. King, and the court rejected the seller's First Amendment defense.

The estate's licensing has historically been handled by Intellectual Properties Management (IPM), its licensing agent. An IPM representative told Atlanta public radio station WABE that using Dr. King's name or likeness without written permission is infringement. The King Center has also said it does not approve merchandise, advertising or entertainment uses of his words or image.

What this means for a shop:

  • Do not print Dr. King's photo or a traced, illustrated or pop-art portrait on shirts for sale.
  • Do not print passages from the "I Have a Dream" speech or his other copyrighted speeches and books.
  • Event names are different. A shirt that names the event a customer is attending, such as "MLK Day of Service 2027" with the organization's name, describes the day. Even so, keep his portrait off it.
  • If a customer insists, send them to the estate's licensing process or to officially licensed merchandise.

Black History Month themes

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) sets an annual national theme. Its founder, Carter G. Woodson, launched Negro History Week, first observed in 1926, and the observance became Black History Month in 1976. For 2026, the centennial year, ASALH's theme was "A Century of Black History Commemorations."

ASALH had not published the 2027 theme as of Oct. 26, 2026. Schools and companies often want the theme on the shirt, so hold theme-based designs until ASALH announces it, and quote those orders as "theme TBA" until then.

Big MLK Day events

  • San Antonio MLK March, Jan. 18, 2027. Visit San Antonio lists the 40th annual march with a 10 a.m. kickoff and lineup from 9 a.m. The roughly 2.75-mile route runs along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy to Pittman-Sullivan Park. The event is billed as one of the largest MLK marches in the country, and church groups, schools, fraternities, sororities and employers march in matching shirts.
  • Savannah MLK Day Parade, Jan. 18, 2027, 10 a.m. WTOC reported that parade applications opened in September 2026.
  • Atlanta MLK Day 5K, Jan. 18, 2027. A Piedmont Park 5K is listed on RunSignup with a 9 a.m. start.

Houston and other cities hold large MLK parades too, but their 2027 dates were not published at the time of writing. Check each organizer's site before quoting a deadline.

Design ideas that need no license

Group shirts for these events sell on identity, not on Dr. King's portrait:

  • Organization plus event. "First Baptist Youth, MLK March 2027" or "Team Habitat, Day of Service." These are the bulk of real orders.
  • Service language. "Serve," "Show up," "Day On, Not a Day Off," with original art like linked hands, a dove or a city skyline.
  • Unity and community art. Original illustrations of a march route, the city's MLK Drive street sign style, or the year in bold type.
  • Black History Month heritage designs. Original art inspired by Kente-style patterns, African map outlines, Pan-African colors, or the names of local leaders and HBCUs (HBCU names and logos are trademarks; school shirts need the school's approval).
  • Public domain words. Nineteenth-century writings and speeches, such as Frederick Douglass's, are in the public domain.

For volunteer days, pick a bright color so crews can find each other. Black, white and red are the most requested for parade groups.

Running the order

MLK Day orders arrive right after the holiday rush, often with a deadline only two weeks out. A few habits help:

  1. Open orders in early December. Contact the churches, schools and nonprofits that ordered last year before Christmas.
  2. Use a preorder form. Collect sizes and payment by early January, then print once.
  3. Plan for cold. A January march means long sleeves and hoodies. The fleece and hoodie season guide covers heavyweight blanks that press well.
  4. Gang the sheet. One design in adult and youth sizes, plus a small left-chest logo, fits on one gang sheet.

When is MLK Day 2027?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2027 is Monday, Jan. 18, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's federal holiday schedule. The holiday falls on the third Monday of January each year, and it is also observed as the national MLK Day of Service.

Can I sell shirts with Martin Luther King Jr.'s picture on them?

Not without a license. Georgia's Supreme Court ruled in 1982 that Dr. King's right of publicity survives his death and belongs to his heirs, and the estate licenses his image and name. Original event and service designs avoid the problem.

Is the "I Have a Dream" speech copyrighted?

Yes. Dr. King registered the speech for copyright in 1963, and in 1999 the Eleventh Circuit held that delivering it at the March on Washington did not place it in the public domain. The estate licenses the speech, so printing its text on shirts for sale needs permission.

What is the Black History Month theme for 2027?

ASALH, which sets the annual national theme, had not published the 2027 theme as of Oct. 26, 2026. The 2026 theme was "A Century of Black History Commemorations," marking 100 years since Negro History Week was first observed in 1926.

When should groups order MLK Day shirts?

Groups should order by early January. MLK Day is Jan. 18, 2027, and many shops are closed or backed up over the holidays, so a two-to-three-week lead time ending around Jan. 4 leaves room for size changes and shipping.

Where it fits in the DTF Database

San Antonio shops will want the Fiesta San Antonio 2027 guide and the Texas rodeo season guide for the rest of the spring calendar. Nonprofit customers can use the Giving Tuesday fundraiser shirt guide, and the supplier directory lists DTF transfer shops by state for rush orders.
