Beefy Hanes t shirts are the Hanes Beefy-T, a heavyweight 6.1 oz cotton tee with a classic boxy fit and a reputation for lasting through years of washing. The standard style is 5180. It costs little as a blank, it is thick enough to press cleanly, and it is one of the few budget tees that is heavier than a Gildan 5000. This guide covers what the shirt is made of, how it fits, how it compares with other blanks, and how to get a DTF transfer to last on it.

What are Hanes Beefy-T shirts?

Hanes Beefy-T shirts are heavyweight cotton t-shirts known for a thick, durable feel and a roomy classic fit. The standard Beefy-T (style 5180) is a 6.1 oz tee made from preshrunk cotton jersey, with double-needle stitching on the collar, sleeves and hem and taping from shoulder to shoulder. It is sold in adult sizes S to 3XL, with 4XL in selected colors, and it is a common blank for printing.

The fabric note matters for printing. Most colors are 100% cotton, but some heathers and Ash are cotton and polyester blends, and a blend wants a slightly lower press temperature than pure cotton. Check the spec of the exact color you buy before you order a case.

How heavy is a Beefy-T compared with other blanks?

At 6.1 oz, the Beefy-T sits at the top of the weight range for everyday tees. It is heavier than the Gildan 5000 at 5.3 oz and about the same as the Comfort Colors 1717. The ring-spun fashion tees are far lighter: the Next Level 3600 is 4.3 oz and the Bella+Canvas 3001 is 4.2 oz.

The tier matters as much as the brand. Our premium tee vs classic tee comparison explains why a classic tee like the Beefy-T suits events, teams and giveaways, while a ring-spun tee suits retail. For measurements across brands, the Gildan size chart guide and the unisex t-shirt size chart are the quickest way to compare a Beefy-T against a shirt you already own.

Are Beefy-T shirts good for DTF printing?

Yes. A heavyweight cotton tee is a good surface for a DTF transfer, because the dense, even jersey gives the adhesive something firm to bond to and the fabric does not stretch under the press. The Beefy-T is not a premium canvas: its surface is a little more textured than a ring-spun tee, so very fine lines can look slightly softer. For bold full-color art, team names and logos it prints well.

Press a Beefy-T like any cotton garment:

  1. Pre-press the shirt for 3 to 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  2. Press the transfer at 300 to 325°F for 10 to 15 seconds at medium-firm pressure.
  3. Let the film cool, then cold peel it slowly.
  4. Cover the print with parchment and press again for 5 to 10 seconds.

Those are the standard cotton settings from our press settings guide and the temperature and time chart. Always follow your transfer supplier's sheet if it differs. For a blended color, lower the temperature toward the 290 to 310°F blend range.

Does a Beefy-T shrink?

The shirt is sold preshrunk, so shrinkage is small, but cotton can still lose a little length in a hot dryer. Pre-press before you print, as the first press also takes out most of the remaining movement. For a printed shirt, wash inside out in cool water and tumble dry low. Our DTF wash and care guide has the full routine.

Where to buy Beefy-T blanks

Hanes blanks are sold by the major wholesale distributors and by single-piece sellers. Wholesale accounts give the lowest unit price on a full case, while retail sellers let you buy one or two shirts to test a transfer first. For a comparison of distributors, see the wholesale blank apparel buying guide. Prices change, so quote from the seller on the day you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Hanes Beefy-T and a regular Hanes tee?

The Beefy-T is Hanes' heavyweight cotton tee at 6.1 oz, while lighter Hanes styles such as the ComfortSoft and Nano-T are 5.2 oz and 4.5 oz. The Beefy-T is thicker and boxier and costs about the same as other budget blanks.

Do Beefy-T shirts run big or small?

They fit true to size with a roomy, boxy cut, and many buyers keep their usual size. If you want a closer fit, a ring-spun tee such as the Bella+Canvas 3001 is cut slimmer. Compare chest widths in the unisex size chart before you order a case.

Is the Hanes Beefy-T 100% cotton?

Most colors are 100% cotton, but a few heather and Ash colors include polyester. Check the product spec for your color, because a blend should be pressed at a lower temperature than pure cotton.

Can you press DTF transfers on a Beefy-T pocket tee?

Yes. Press on the flat area of the chest, and keep the transfer clear of the pocket seam, because a seam stops the press from applying even pressure. Our guide to pressing over seams and pockets covers the technique.

How long do DTF prints last on a Beefy-T?

With correct press settings and cool-water washing, a DTF print should survive many washes. The dense cotton helps, because it holds its shape through the wash. Skip fabric softener and high-heat drying to get the most from a print.
