The Gasparilla Pirate Fest Invasion and Parade of the Pirates returns to Tampa on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2027, with the Children's Gasparilla parade a week earlier on Saturday, Jan. 23, according to the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and the Pirate Fest organizers. The Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic holds its 50th running Feb. 20-21. Between krewe members, parade-goers in pirate gear, and thousands of runners, January and February in Tampa are a pirate-shirt season. The name also has an unusual trademark history, decided in a precedential ruling in October 2025. This guide covers the dates, who owns what, and shirt ideas a Tampa Bay shop can sell.

The tradition

The Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla (YMKG) says it was founded in 1904, when about 40 members in costumes rented from New Orleans staged a mock pirate attack on horseback during Tampa's May 4, 1904, festival parade. The first ship invasion came in 1911, and the current ship, Jose Gasparilla II, was christened on Jan. 5, 1954. YMKG describes it as a 165-foot, three-masted replica and the world's only fully rigged pirate ship.

YMKG's event page describes the parade as more than 140 units, more than 103 floats, five marching bands, and over 50 krewes on a 4.5-mile route. The parade runs from Bay to Bay Boulevard along Bayshore Boulevard, then up Ashley Drive to Cass Street. The City of Tampa says over 300,000 spectators are expected. The krewes throw beads, treasures, and doubloons to the crowd.

That "50 krewes" figure is the part a print shop should notice. Each krewe is a club with its own name, colors, and members, and krewes order shirts, polos, and jackets year after year.

Who owns "Gasparilla" on clothing

This is less obvious than it looks.

YMKG holds live federal registrations for GASPARILLA for conducting parades and festival events, claiming first use in 1904, and for YE MYSTIC KREWE OF GASPARILLA and YMKG for its charitable and parade services. Those registrations do not cover clothing.

When YMKG applied to register GASPARILLA for shirts, hats, and other clothing, the USPTO refused it because of a live registration owned by EventFest, Inc., the Tampa company that produces Pirate Fest: GASPARILLA TREASURES, registered in 2014 for hats, shirts, sweatshirts, and tank tops, with the word "Gasparilla" disclaimed. YMKG argued it had licensed the name to EventFest and filed a consent agreement. In a precedential decision dated Oct. 14, 2025 (In re Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla), the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board called the agreement a "naked consent" and upheld the refusal for clothing and drinkware. YMKG's application went forward only for jewelry, pins, coins, and patches, and registered on the Supplemental Register in March 2026.

What that means in practice:

  • No one holds a federal registration for the single word GASPARILLA on clothing. EventFest's GASPARILLA TREASURES is the live apparel registration.
  • That is not a free pass. YMKG and EventFest both use the name for their events, and a shirt that copies the official Pirate Fest artwork, the krewe's crest, or a sponsor's logo, or that is sold as official event merchandise, is a problem regardless of registrations.
  • Many unrelated businesses also hold GASPARILLA registrations for their own goods (a rum, an inn, a golf event), so "Gasparilla" plus another word can collide with someone else's mark.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Selling at the parade is a separate rule. The Pirate Fest FAQ says selling, advertising, sampling, or giving away products along the route is prohibited unless licensed and approved, that 2027 vendor applications are not open yet, and that City Code Enforcement removes unpermitted vendors. Sell before the event, not on Bayshore.

Shirt ideas

Krewe shirts. The krewe's own name, crest, and colors, with "2027" and a member name on the back. These are the krewe's own marks, so the order should come from the krewe. Generic pirate designs. Skull and crossed cutlasses, a three-masted ship, a treasure map of Tampa Bay, "Arrr You Ready," "Invasion Day," "Bayshore Bound." Pirate imagery is centuries old and nobody's trademark. Family and kids' shirts for Jan. 23. The Children's parade is alcohol-free and family-oriented. Matching "Little Pirate" and "Pirate Crew" tees in youth and adult sizes sell well; the placement guide covers youth sizing. Running club shirts. The Distance Classic gives half and 15K entrants a gender-specific performance race shirt, and sells a 50th running apparel line. Running clubs want their own: "Pirate Pace Team," the club name, and "50th Running" text without the race's logo. The race's challenge series (the Michelob Ultra Challenge covers all four races) gives a "4 races, 2 days" angle. Our January and February 2027 race guide covers the rest of the winter race calendar.

Registration prices published on RunGasparilla.com for the Oct. 1 to Nov. 30, 2026, tier, before service fees. Prices rise Dec. 1, 2026, and again Jan. 9, 2027.

15K$70$85
8K$65$75
5K$60$75
Michelob Ultra Challenge (all four)$365$435

Entrants who register after Jan. 9, 2027, still get a shirt, but their size is not guaranteed, according to the race.

Blanks and pressing

Tampa in late January is mild, so tees, tanks, and lightweight long sleeves sell best. Black, red, and gold are the pirate palette, and purple and gold read as parade colors. Performance polyester is the running choice; press it at a lower temperature to avoid dye migration and scorch marks. The DTF temperature and time chart lists settings by fabric, and our dye migration guide covers red and black polyester, which bleed the most. Metallic gold looks best with a full white underbase; our specialty DTF guide covers glitter and metallic effects.

Production timing

  • November to early December: krewes reorder member shirts for the season. Quote early; krewes often order by member list.
  • Early January: family and kids' shirts for Jan. 23 and parade-day shirts for Jan. 30.
  • Late January to mid-February: running-club shirts for the Feb. 20-21 Distance Classic.

The same pirate-and-parade energy carries into Mardi Gras, which falls on Feb. 9, 2027; our Mardi Gras 2027 guide covers it.
