What "Natural" means
On some styles Natural is undyed cotton. SanMar describes Gildan 5000 Natural as non-dyed fabric with visible specks of fibres and cotton seeds, and Port & Company PC61 Natural as minimally processed to keep the natural colour of undyed cotton. Those specks are part of the look, not a defect. Other brands' Natural colours are dyed to a cream shade and look more even.
Printing DTF on off-white blanks
- Colours stay accurate. DTF prints a white underbase behind the colours by default, so colours stay accurate on cream and natural fabric. A design that uses white as a colour will show as white against the off-white shirt, which can look intentional on vintage designs or like a mistake on others.
- Check the shade against the artwork. Light yellows and creams in a design can disappear on an ivory or butter blank.
- Use cotton settings. The styles above are cotton or cotton-heavy; the DTF temperature and time chart lists settings by fabric.
- Protect undyed cotton from scorching. Natural cotton shows heat marks more readily than dark colours; a cover sheet helps, as covered in the Teflon sheet vs parchment paper guide.
For the blanks themselves, the Comfort Colors t-shirt size chart, the Bella+Canvas size chart and the Gildan 5000 guide cover fit and weight.
Frequently asked questions
What colour is off-white in t-shirts?
Usually a colour named Natural, Cream, Ivory, Bone, Ecru or Vintage White. Gildan is one brand that also sells a colour called Off White, on the 5000 and 64000.
Is Natural the same as cream?
Not across brands. Natural is often undyed cotton with a slightly speckled look, while cream colours are dyed. Next Level 3600 sells both Natural and Cream.
What is the Comfort Colors off-white?
Ivory. The 1717 tee and the 6014 long sleeve both come in Ivory, alongside Butter and Sandstone.
Does DTF print well on off-white shirts?
Yes. DTF prints its own white underbase, so colours stay accurate on cream and natural fabric.
