Diwali, the festival of lights, falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026 by most Hindu calendars, with the five-day festival running from Dhanteras on Friday, Nov. 6 to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Families, temples, student associations, and community groups across the US hold Diwali dinners, melas, and cultural shows on the weekends around those dates, and many of them want matching shirts.

This guide covers the 2026 dates, design ideas, cultural points to get right, color advice for dark shirts, and when to order DTF transfers.

Diwali 2026 dates

Diwali 2026 dates
DayDate
DhanterasFri., Nov. 6
Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)Sat., Nov. 7
Diwali and Lakshmi PujaSun., Nov. 8
Govardhan PujaMon., Nov. 9
Bhai DoojTue., Nov. 10

Dates can differ by a day depending on the regional calendar a family or temple follows, so confirm with the customer before printing a date on a shirt. Diwali is also observed by Sikhs, who celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day, and by Jains.

Community events do not always land on Nov. 8. Many temples and campus groups hold their Diwali shows on the Saturdays before or after, so the busiest order window can run from late October into mid-November.

Shirt design ideas

  • Diya and light designs. A single lit diya, rows of lamps, or a string of lights across the chest. Simple, recognizable, and easy to print in warm colors.
  • Rangoli and mandala patterns. Symmetric rangoli art in saffron, magenta, gold, and teal works as a full-front print or a small left-chest design.
  • Lotus and marigold art. Both appear in Diwali decoration and work well on cream, maroon, or black shirts.
  • Greeting text. "Happy Diwali," "Shubh Deepavali," or "Happy Deepavali" in English or Devanagari script. If the design uses Devanagari, Tamil, Gujarati, or another script, have a fluent reader check the proof, because some fonts break the joined letters.
  • Family matching sets. One design with names, "Family Diwali 2026," or roles like "Chief Diya Lighter" for kids.
  • Event shirts. Student association Diwali shows, temple volunteer shirts, and dance team shirts with the group name and year.

Cultural points to get right

Diwali is a religious festival for many customers, so a few habits avoid mistakes:

  • Ask before using images of deities. Some families are happy to wear Lakshmi or Ganesha art; others prefer not to put sacred images on clothing at all. Let the customer decide, and do not place sacred images on socks, shoes, or the lower half of a garment.
  • Check the spelling and script. Proofs in Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, or Gujarati should be checked by someone who reads the language.
  • Do not assume one tradition. Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains mark the day differently, and customs vary by region. Generic light, lamp, and rangoli designs work across groups.

Colors on dark and festive shirts

Diwali designs lean on gold, saffron, and deep pink. On black or maroon shirts, DTF prints a white underbase first, so bright colors stay vivid. Standard DTF ink cannot print true metallic gold, though; it prints a gold-toned yellow or tan. For real shine, a shop needs a glitter, metallic, or foil specialty transfer. Our glitter and glow specialty DTF guide explains the options and their pricing.

Many Diwali outfits are kurtas and dresses in silk, rayon, or polyester blends rather than cotton tees. Those fabrics need lower press temperatures and a test press. The press settings chart lists 280 to 300°F for tri-blends with rayon and 270 to 285°F for 100% polyester.

When to order

Work back from the customer's event date, not just Nov. 8. For a Sunday, Nov. 8 celebration:

  • Art approved: by Mon., Oct. 26
  • Transfers ordered: by Tue., Oct. 27, with standard turnaround and ground shipping
  • Shirts pressed and delivered: by Thu., Nov. 5

For event weekends of Oct. 31 or Nov. 1, move each step a week earlier. Group orders with many sizes take longer to collect, so give organizers a firm size-list deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Diwali in 2026?

Diwali falls on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2026 by most Hindu calendars, with Lakshmi Puja that evening. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday, Nov. 6 to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Some regional calendars differ by a day, so confirm with the customer.

Can DTF transfers print gold for Diwali shirts?

Standard DTF ink prints gold as a flat gold-toned color, not a metallic shine. For a shiny gold effect, order a metallic, glitter, or foil specialty transfer, or combine a DTF print with a foil accent. Expect specialty transfers to cost more than standard ones.

Is it okay to print Hindu deities on t-shirts?

Some customers are comfortable with it and some are not, so ask rather than assume. If a customer wants deity art, keep it on the upper body of the garment and never on socks, shoes, or items meant to be sat on. Lamps, rangoli, lotus, and marigold designs work for nearly everyone.

What fabric are Diwali shirts usually printed on?

Event and family shirts are usually cotton or cotton-blend tees, which take DTF well at 300 to 325°F for cotton. Kurtas and festive tops are often silk, rayon, or polyester blends, which need lower temperatures and a test press before a full run.
