Día de los Muertos is observed Nov. 1 and 2, and in 2026 the biggest shirt-buying window opens in late October. San Antonio's Muertos Fest at Hemisfair runs Oct. 23 to 25. The free festival is in its 14th year and has grown from a small altar exhibition in 2013 to more than 80 handmade altars and over 135,000 attendees, according to the organizers. Families, schools, dance groups, and procession teams order shirts for events like it across the Southwest and beyond.

This guide covers Día de los Muertos shirt ideas that respect the tradition, which imagery is safe to print and which is owned by someone else, and how to time orders so they arrive before the festivals.

What Día de los Muertos is, and why it matters for shirt design

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition of remembering family members who have died. Families build ofrendas (home altars) with photos, candles, marigolds, food, and favorite objects of the people being honored. UNESCO added the Indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead in Mexico to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.

It is not Mexican Halloween. The mood is warm and celebratory, but the purpose is remembrance. Shirts that get this right sell better to the people who observe the holiday, and shirts that treat it as a costume theme tend to draw complaints. When in doubt, design for the family honoring someone, not for a party.

Día de los Muertos shirt ideas that sell

  • Memorial photo shirts. A photo of the person being honored inside a marigold or papel picado frame, with their name and years. DTF prints full-color photos well on both light and dark shirts. See our photo printing guide for resolution tips. These are the most personal orders and often come in family quantities.
  • Family name calavera shirts. One decorated skull design with each family member's name on the forehead or below. It is the same artwork with a name change, which is efficient to produce on a gang sheet.
  • Procession and dance group shirts. Groups walking in a procession or performing folklórico often want matching shirts with the group name. Ask what colors the group wears so the shirt works with costumes.
  • Bilingual remembrance phrases. Short original phrases in Spanish and English, such as "Siempre en nuestros corazones" or "Forever in our hearts," paired with marigolds. Have a native speaker check any Spanish text before printing.
  • Marigold and papel picado patterns. All-over-style front designs or sleeve strips without skulls work for customers who want the colors without skeleton imagery, including school and workplace events.
  • Kids and classroom shirts. Schools often teach Día de los Muertos in Spanish classes and hold altar projects. Keep kids' designs bright and friendly. Our youth size guides list print widths for smaller shirts.
  • Local festival shirts, with permission. A shirt naming a specific festival needs the organizer's approval if the name or logo is used. Generic "Día de los Muertos 2026" designs with a city name are safer.

What to avoid printing

  • Film and character art. Characters, logos, and scenes from animated films about the holiday belong to the studios that made them. Do not copy them, even as "inspired by" fan art. Our licensed character guide explains the risk.
  • Celebrity likenesses. Printing a real person's face, including famous artists, can raise right-of-publicity issues. Stick to original figures.
  • Copied artwork. Many calavera designs online are a specific artist's work. Original art, or art licensed from the artist, is the only safe route. Posada's original prints from the early 20th century are old enough to be in the US public domain, but modern redraws of them are new works owned by whoever drew them.
  • Costume framing. Avoid treating sacred elements as a joke or a sexy costume theme. It alienates the customers most likely to order in quantity.

Production tips for bright Día de los Muertos colors

  • Black and dark shirts are the default. Marigold orange, magenta, turquoise, and yellow pop on black. DTF prints a white underbase, so colors stay bright on dark fabric.
  • Watch fine detail. Papel picado and calavera patterns have thin lines and small cutouts. Keep lines at least about 1 point thick at print size so the film and adhesive hold.
  • Glow accents. Candlelight processions happen after dark. Glow-in-the-dark transfers on candle flames or skull outlines are a good upsell. See our glitter and glow transfer guide.
  • Press settings. Most dark cotton tees press at standard DTF settings. Check the DTF temperature and time chart for blends and polyester.
