Lunar New Year 2027 begins on Saturday, February 6, 2027, and the Hong Kong Observatory's 2027 calendar names it the year of Ding-wei, the Year of the Goat. In English the same zodiac sign is also called the Sheep or the Ram; the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade calls 2027 the Year of the Ram. The 15-day festival ends with the Lantern Festival on Saturday, February 20, 2027. For a custom shirt shop, that means family reunion shirts, restaurant and business staff shirts, school program shirts, and parade group orders in January and early February.

The 2027 dates

The 2027 dates
DateEvent
Sat. Feb. 6, 2027Lunar New Year (Chinese calendar), first day of the Year of the Goat
Sun. Feb. 7Seollal, Korean Lunar New Year
Sat. Feb. 20Lantern Festival, the 15th day
Sat. Feb. 20San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade, according to the organizer

The dates are not identical across communities. Korea's Seollal falls on Sunday, February 7, 2027, one day after the Chinese calendar date, and South Korea's public holiday runs Feb. 6 to 9. Vietnamese Tết is expected to begin on Feb. 6. Confirm the date with the customer when a shirt is for a specific community's celebration.

The San Francisco parade organizer's site lists February 20, 2027 and has not posted a start time; the 2026 parade began at 5:15 p.m. New York's Better Chinatown USA had not announced 2027 parade dates as of Oct. 13, 2026. In 2026 the New York parade was held on a Sunday a few weeks after New Year's Day, so expect a later date.

Traditions that shape the designs

The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center notes that Chinese and Vietnamese celebrations share a strong attachment to red, seen in red clothing and red paper printed with New Year wishes. Married elders give money in red envelopes to younger relatives, and firecrackers, drums, and lion dancers are meant to scare away bad luck. People often buy new clothes before the new year, which is one reason shirt orders spike in January.

Gold is widely used alongside red in decorations, but red is the color with the strongest documented tradition. A red shirt with a gold or white print, or a white shirt with a red print, covers most requests.

The Fire element is often attached to 2027 (Fire Goat), according to the Farmers' Almanac; the Hong Kong Observatory lists only the Ding-wei year name and the Goat.

Shirt ideas

Family reunion shirts. The family surname, "Year of the Goat 2027," and a simple goat or ram illustration. Matching sets for a reunion dinner are the most common order. Restaurant and business staff shirts. Many restaurants and shops dress staff in red for the New Year period. A small left-chest New Year greeting and a back print with the business name is a clean design. School and community program shirts. Schools, cultural centers, and lion dance teams run programs in early February. Include youth sizes; see the youth size guide. Parade group shirts. Marching groups, sponsors, and volunteers for the San Francisco parade on Feb. 20 or a local parade. Baby's first Lunar New Year. Bodysuits and toddler shirts for children born in the Year of the Goat are a steady seller.

Get the words and imagery right

Historian Chiou-Ling Yeh told NBC News that designs centered only on Chinese zodiac animals overlook the Vietnamese, Korean, and other communities who also celebrate. Several large brands have been criticized for Lunar New Year products, including a shoe design whose characters were reported to read "fat." Practical rules:

  • Use "Lunar New Year" when the customer serves several communities, and "Chinese New Year," "Tết," or "Seollal" when they mean a specific celebration.
  • Have every Chinese, Vietnamese, or Korean phrase checked by a fluent speaker, preferably the customer, before printing. Machine translation is not enough.
  • Avoid "chopstick" or faux-Asian novelty fonts and caricatures.
  • Let the customer supply culturally specific artwork when possible.

Printing notes

  • Red shirts can bleed dye into light inks on polyester blends. Use 100 percent cotton red blanks or check the dye migration guide.
  • DTF reproduces fine brush-style lettering and gradients without extra screens; confirm press settings in the DTF temperature and time chart.
  • Metallic gold accents read best as a specialty transfer; see the glitter and specialty DTF guide.
  • Holiday orders from December carry into January, so quote Lunar New Year work early. The seasonal DTF calendar lists order timelines by holiday.

When is Lunar New Year 2027?

Lunar New Year 2027 is Saturday, February 6, 2027, according to the Hong Kong Observatory's calendar. The festival runs through the Lantern Festival on Saturday, February 20. Korean Seollal falls one day later, on February 7, 2027.

2027 is the Year of the Goat in the Chinese zodiac. The same sign is also translated as the Sheep or the Ram, and the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade calls it the Year of the Ram. The Farmers' Almanac describes 2027 as a Fire Goat year.

What colors should Lunar New Year shirts be?

Red is the traditional color, as the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center notes for Chinese and Vietnamese celebrations. Gold is common in decorations alongside red. Red shirts with gold or white prints cover most orders.

When is the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade in 2027?

The organizer's website lists Saturday, February 20, 2027, the same day as the Lantern Festival. A start time had not been posted as of October 13, 2026; the 2026 parade started at 5:15 p.m.

How do I avoid mistakes on Lunar New Year shirts?

Have any Chinese, Vietnamese, or Korean text checked by a fluent speaker, use "Lunar New Year" for broad audiences, avoid novelty faux-Asian fonts, and let the customer approve a proof before printing.
