March Madness 2027 Shirts: Dates and NCAA Trademarks
March Madness 2027 starts Selection Sunday, March 14, with 76 teams. Final Four dates, NCAA trademark rules, and shirt ideas that stay licensed-safe.

The 2027 tournament calendar
| Date | Round |
|---|---|
| Sun. March 14 | Selection Sunday |
| Tue.-Wed. March 16 to 17 | Opening Round (formerly the First Four), Dayton, Ohio, and a second site to be named |
| Wed. March 17 | Women's tournament begins |
| Thu.-Fri. March 18 to 19 | Men's First Round |
| Sat.-Sun. March 20 to 21 | Men's Second Round |
| Thu.-Fri. March 25 to 26 | Men's Sweet 16 |
| Sat.-Sun. March 27 to 28 | Men's Elite Eight |
| Fri. April 2 | Women's national semifinals, Columbus |
| Sat. April 3 | Men's national semifinals, Detroit |
| Sun. April 4 | Women's championship, Columbus |
| Mon. April 5 | Men's championship, Detroit |
The men's dates come from the NCAA's published 2027 schedule. The women's Final Four dates come from the NCAA and the Columbus host committee. Detroit last hosted the men's semifinals in 2009, with Michigan State as the host school for 2027. Columbus last hosted the women's Final Four in 2018.
What changes with 76 teams
The NCAA expanded both the men's and women's tournaments from 68 to 76 teams starting in 2027. The old First Four becomes a 24-team Opening Round on the Tuesday and Wednesday after Selection Sunday, with 12 games instead of four. According to reporting on the NCAA's format, the Opening Round pairs the lowest-seeded at-large teams on the 11 and 12 lines and the lowest-seeded conference champions on the 15 and 16 lines. Dayton keeps its role as host, and the NCAA will pick a second Opening Round city before the 2027 tournament.
For shirt shops, the practical change is more teams with a reason to buy "we're in" shirts on Selection Sunday night, and more teams that are out by Wednesday. Do not pre-print a team in the field until the bracket is announced.
The trademark rules that matter
The NCAA holds federal trademark registrations on the names most people use for the tournament. According to the Broadcast Law Blog, which tracks the NCAA's registrations each year, those include March Madness, The Big Dance, Final Four, Final 4, Women's Final Four, Elite Eight, Women's Elite Eight, and The Road to the Final Four. The same blog reports NCAA registrations on Selection Sunday, First Four, Midnight Madness, and March Is On.
"Sweet Sixteen" is a special case. The blog reports that the plain phrase is registered to someone other than the NCAA, while the NCAA holds registrations on NCAA Sweet Sixteen and NCAA Sweet 16. Either way, it is not a phrase to put on a shirt for sale.
The NCAA enforces these marks. In March 2026 it asked a federal court to stop the sportsbook DraftKings from using March Madness, Final Four, Elite Eight, and Sweet Sixteen in its marketing, according to Associated Press reports. DraftKings said it had used the terms for years and had the right to do so. We did not find a ruling as of Oct. 15, 2026.
School names, logos, mascots, and in some cases school color combinations are a separate layer. Those are controlled by each school, most through a collegiate licensing agency. Our College Football Playoff licensing guide walks through how licensing applications and fees work and the court case on school colors, and the same rules apply to basketball.
This is general information, not legal advice. If a customer wants a school mark or a tournament name on a shirt they plan to sell, the answer is a license.
Shirt ideas that stay clear
Bracket-pool and office shirts. A blank bracket graphic, "Bracket Busted," "Upset Alert," "My Bracket Is Fine," "Office Pool Champion," or the pool's own name. Generic basketball art and bracket lines are not anyone's trademark. Watch-party and bar shirts. "Tip-Off Party," "Hoops and Hops," the bar's own name, the year, and a ball graphic. Avoid the word "Madness" paired with "March." School and booster orders. Licensed vendors and the school's own booster club or athletic department can supply official marks. If the customer is the school or its booster club with permission, get it in writing before printing. Women's tournament and local-team pride. City pride shirts ("Columbus Hoops Weekend," "Detroit April 2027") avoid the NCAA's event names. Columbus and Detroit shops can sell to visiting fans this way. Youth leagues and rec teams. March is also spring league season. Our team sports and spirit shirt guide covers names, numbers, and blanks for basketball teams.Production timing
- Before Selection Sunday: print generic bracket, office-pool, and watch-party designs. These sell the whole month.
- Selection Sunday night to Wednesday: quote "in the tournament" shirts for licensed customers and booster clubs only after the bracket is out.
- Sweet 16 and Elite Eight weekends: short runs for local teams still alive. DTF fits this well because there are no screens to burn.
- Final Four week: city-pride and visitor shirts for Detroit and Columbus.
The Opening Round lands on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, so March production is crowded. Our St. Patrick's Day 2027 guide covers that side of the month, and the Super Bowl LXI and Valentine's Day guide covers February.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Selection Sunday 2027?
Selection Sunday is Sunday, March 14, 2027. The 76-team bracket is revealed that evening, and the Opening Round starts two days later on Tuesday, March 16.
Where is the 2027 Final Four?
The men's Final Four is at Ford Field in Detroit, with semifinals on Saturday, April 3, and the championship on Monday, April 5, 2027. The women's Final Four is at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on April 2 and April 4.
Can I put "March Madness" on a shirt I sell?
Not without a license. The NCAA holds federal registrations on March Madness, Final Four, Elite Eight, The Big Dance, and related terms, and it has gone to court to stop unlicensed use. Use generic phrases like "Bracket Busted" or "Tip-Off Party" instead.
How many teams are in the 2027 NCAA tournament?
Both the men's and women's tournaments have 76 teams starting in 2027, up from 68. The extra teams play in a 12-game Opening Round on March 16 and 17 that replaces the First Four.
What shirts sell best during March Madness?
Generic bracket and office-pool designs sell all month because they are not tied to a team. Local-team shirts spike after Selection Sunday and during deep runs, but only licensed sellers or the school itself should print team marks.
