St. Patrick's Day 2027 is Wednesday, March 17, 2027, and the biggest parades and shamrock races land on the weekends around it. Boston's parade is Sunday, March 14, Portland's Shamrock Run is the same day, Virginia Beach's Shamrock Marathon weekend runs March 19 to 21, and Chicago's Shamrock Shuffle is March 20 and 21. For a custom shirt shop that means group orders for parade marchers, pub crawls, race teams, schools, and offices from February into mid-March.

New York's parade organizer says the parade is held on March 17 and moves to the previous day only when the 17th is a Sunday, so the 2027 parade should be Wednesday, March 17; the organizer had not posted 2027 details as of Oct. 13, 2026. The New York parade starts at 11:00 a.m. and runs up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street, according to its FAQ. Chicago's downtown parade and river dyeing are traditionally held on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, which would be March 13, 2027, but the 2027 date has not been announced. Savannah holds its parade on March 17; the city calls it one of the largest in the country.

The races in more detail

Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend, Virginia Beach. The 2027 weekend is March 19 to 21 and includes the marathon, half marathon, 8K, and the Shamrock Final Mile, which benefits Operation Smile. The finish is on the Oceanfront near the King Neptune statue. Running USA reported that the 2026 event drew a record 25,000 runners and sold out every distance, and that 2027 is the 55th running. Start times for 2027 were not on the official site as of Oct. 13. Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle, Chicago. Registration for 2027 is open. The Mile is Saturday, March 20, and the 8K and 2-mile walk are Sunday, March 21, starting and finishing in Grant Park. The race says 8K runners must hold a 15-minute-per-mile pace and finish within 1 hour 15 minutes. Shamrock Run Fest, Portland. Sunday, March 14, 2027, with a half marathon, 8K, 5K, 5K walk, and the Doernbecher Leprechaun Lap for kids 10 and under. Start times have not been published. Los Angeles Marathon. Sunday, March 7, 2027, according to the McCourt Foundation, which organizes the race. Registration is open.

Rock 'n' Roll Washington DC, now a half marathon and 5K, had not published its 2027 date as of Oct. 13.

Race and parade names are trademarks

"Shamrock Shuffle" is a federally registered word mark for organizing races, and the Chicago race's logo is registered separately. Marathon names and logos are generally protected by their organizers. A team shirt can say "Team O'Brien, Chicago 8K, March 21, 2027" without using the race's name or logo. Print a race or parade name or logo only when the order comes from the organizer or with its written permission.

Ireland treats the harp and the shamrock as State emblems and registered them internationally under the Paris Convention, according to Ireland's Department of Enterprise. Irish law requires government consent to use a State emblem in business in Ireland. How that applies to a shirt printed and sold in the United States is not settled, so shops should avoid copying the official Irish harp and should not print the Guinness harp, a registered brand trademark since 1876.

This is general information, not legal advice. See the licensed character and trademark guide for borderline orders.

Get the symbols right

  • A shamrock has three leaves. The Library of Congress notes Patrick is said to have used the three-leafed plant to explain the Holy Trinity. A four-leaf clover is a rare variant and a luck symbol, not the Irish emblem. Customers notice when a "shamrock" design has four leaves.
  • Green became associated with Ireland in the 18th century, when the United Irishmen adopted it as their revolutionary color, according to the Library of Congress.
  • Pinching people who are not wearing green is an American folk custom, and the leprechaun explanation is folklore.

Shirt ideas

Race team shirts. Matching shirts for a running club or family team, with the team name, distance, and date. Lightweight polyester or tri-blend tees suit runners. Parade group shirts. Marching groups, Irish dance schools, pipe bands, and sponsors in Boston, New York, Savannah, and smaller city parades. Pub crawl and party shirts. Group name and year. Keep beer and spirit brands off the design unless the brand itself is ordering. Office and school shirts. March 17, 2027 is a Wednesday, so expect workplace and school "wear green" days. Include youth sizes; see the youth size guide. Family surname shirts. Surname plus a three-leaf shamrock or Celtic knot drawn by the shop.

Printing notes

  • Kelly green, Irish green, and heather green blanks are standard. Confirm the shade before ordering, because "green" varies widely across brands.
  • Many runners prefer polyester performance tees. Use a low-temperature DTF setting and watch for dye migration; see the dye migration guide and the DTF temperature and time chart.
  • Gold and glitter accents work well as specialty transfers; see the glitter and specialty DTF guide.
  • Quote race orders by mid-February so shirts arrive the week before the race.

When is St. Patrick's Day 2027?

St. Patrick's Day is Wednesday, March 17, 2027. The date is fixed every year. Many parades and races move to nearby weekends, including Boston's parade on Sunday, March 14, and Chicago's Shamrock Shuffle on March 20 and 21.

When is the Shamrock Shuffle 2027?

The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago is March 20 and 21, 2027, according to the race. The Mile is Saturday, and the 8K and 2-mile walk are Sunday, starting and finishing in Grant Park. Registration is open.

When is the Shamrock Marathon 2027 in Virginia Beach?

The Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend is March 19 to 21, 2027, with a marathon, half marathon, 8K, and the Shamrock Final Mile. Running USA reported every 2026 distance sold out, so runners register early.

Can I print a race name on team shirts?

Race names and logos are usually trademarks of the organizer; "Shamrock Shuffle" is federally registered. Use the team name, the distance, the city, and the date instead, and print the race name or logo only with the organizer's permission.

Is a shamrock the same as a four-leaf clover?

No. A shamrock has three leaflets and is the traditional symbol of Ireland. A four-leaf clover is a rare variant, usually of white clover, and is a symbol of luck. Use three leaves for a St. Patrick's Day shamrock design.
