Can you bleach polyester: chlorine bleach on white 100% polyester, oxygen bleach for spandex blends and colours, care label bleach symbols
Yes, white 100% polyester can be washed with chlorine bleach, according to Clorox, which lists polyester as a bleach-safe fibre. The exceptions matter more than the rule: polyester blended with even a small amount of spandex (elastane or Lycra) should not get chlorine bleach, and the garment's care label overrides any general advice. For coloured polyester, spandex blends and decorated shirts, an oxygen (colour-safe) bleach or no bleach at all is the safer choice.

Chlorine bleach vs oxygen bleach

FabricLink's care guide separates the two kinds of household bleach:

Chlorine bleach vs oxygen bleach

Active ingredientSodium hypochloriteSodium perborate or percarbonate
StrengthMost powerful; must be dilutedGentler and slower acting

On polyester with spandexNot recommended; can yellowThe option Clorox points to
On coloured polyesterCan strip colour; check the labelDesigned for colours

How to bleach white polyester

For dingy white 100% polyester shirts, Clorox's published method is to presoak in 1/4 cup of bleach per gallon of cool water for 5 minutes, then wash on hot with 1/3 cup of bleach. Its recommended dose for a regular load is 1/3 cup, or 2/3 cup for an extra-large or heavily soiled load. Never pour undiluted bleach directly onto fabric.

Why bleach can turn polyester yellow

Clorox lists two causes of yellowing: spandex in the blend, since even a small amount blended with another fibre can yellow, and too much or undiluted bleach. Clorox describes yellowing caused by bleach misuse as permanent. For poly-spandex performance wear, Clorox recommends its chlorine-free Clorox 2 for Colors with a long soak instead. The polyester elastane care guide covers washing and drying stretch blends.

Reading the bleach symbol on a care label

US care labels follow the FTC Care Labeling Rule, which lets manufacturers use the ASTM care symbols in place of words. Clorox explains the bleach symbols:

Reading the bleach symbol on a care label
SymbolMeaningFTC wording
Empty triangleAny bleach may be used"Bleach when needed"
Triangle with diagonal linesNon-chlorine bleach only"Only non-chlorine bleach, when needed"
Crossed-out triangleNo bleach of any kind"No bleach" or "Do not bleach"

Under the FTC rule, a label that says nothing about bleach means all bleaches are safe for that garment.

Can you bleach a printed polyester shirt?

Treat decorated garments as "do not bleach". Heat transfer makers print that on their care instructions: STAHLS' care instructions for its CAD-CUT adhesive foil read wash cold, hang dry, do not bleach and do not dry clean. Bleach attacks the printed layer and its adhesive even where the fabric itself would survive. Follow the care card from the transfer supplier; the DTF transfer care guide covers washing printed shirts, and the does polyester shrink guide covers heat in the wash and dryer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use bleach on 100% polyester?

Yes, on white 100% polyester, according to Clorox. Dilute it, and check the care label first.

Does bleach ruin polyester?

Not when diluted and used on plain white polyester. Undiluted bleach, too much bleach, or bleach on a spandex blend can cause permanent yellowing.

Can you bleach polyester with spandex?

Clorox advises against chlorine bleach on any fabric with spandex, even a small amount. Use an oxygen or colour-safe bleach.

Can you bleach a shirt with a DTF print or vinyl?

Not recommended. Transfer makers' care instructions say do not bleach decorated garments.
