Polyester elastane care card: wash in cool or lukewarm water, dry on low heat or air dry, no chlorine bleach, iron on low, DTF press at 250 to 275 degrees F
Polyester elastane fabric usually shrinks very little, but high heat damages the elastane, so a hot dryer is more likely to leave the garment stretched-out and baggy than smaller. Elastane is the same fibre as spandex; LYCRA is a brand name for it. Polyester elastane blends, usually labelled something like 90% polyester and 10% elastane, are used for leggings, activewear, swimwear and performance tees. This guide covers how the blend behaves in the wash and dryer, how to care for it, and how to press a DTF transfer on it.

Does polyester elastane shrink?

Not much. Polyester itself is dimensionally stable under normal care; Custom Ink's published guidance, summarised in DTF Database's does polyester shrink guide, puts 100% polyester within about half a percent of its original size under normal washing, and about 2 to 3 percent after repeated high heat. Elastane adds stretch rather than shrinkage risk. The bigger problem with heat is that elastane loses its recovery, so the fabric no longer snaps back. A blend with more elastane is more sensitive to heat.

DTF Database has not run its own shrinkage tests on polyester elastane garments. The care label on the specific garment is the final word.

How to wash and dry polyester elastane

FabricLink's general fabric care guide gives this advice for fabrics containing spandex:

How to wash and dry polyester elastane
StepGuidance for spandex-containing fabric
WashingHand or machine wash in lukewarm water
BleachDo not use chlorine bleach; use a colour-safe bleach if needed
DryingUse a low temperature setting if machine drying, or drip dry
IroningUse a low setting, iron quickly and do not leave the iron in one place

For polyester, the same guide recommends machine drying at a low temperature and removing the garment as soon as the cycle ends. Following the spandex guidance covers both fibres in a blend.

Will polyester elastane shrink in the dryer?

A low-heat cycle rarely changes the size. High heat is the risk: it can weaken the elastane, leaving the fabric slack, wavy at the hems or with a shiny, glazed patch. Air drying is the safest option for leggings, swimwear and compression garments.

Can you shrink polyester elastane on purpose?

Not reliably. Because polyester resists shrinking, hot washing and drying usually does more damage to the stretch than it does to the size. A garment that is too large is better altered than heat-shrunk.

How to press DTF on polyester elastane

Most performance fabrics are polyester with elastane or spandex, and they need a lower temperature than cotton. DTF Database's temperature and time chart lists 250 to 275 degrees F for 15 to 20 seconds at light to medium pressure for performance and moisture-wicking fabric, with a cold peel. Lower heat also limits dye migration on polyester, where the fabric's dye bleeds into a white print. Test on a hidden seam first, and stretch the fabric gently after pressing to check that the print moves with it. The polyester heat pressing guide covers scorch marks and press-related damage.

Frequently asked questions

Does 90% polyester and 10% elastane shrink?

Very little under normal care. Heat is more likely to damage the elastane's stretch than to shrink the garment. Wash in lukewarm water and dry on low or air dry.

Is elastane the same as spandex?

Yes. Elastane and spandex are two names for the same stretch fibre, and LYCRA is a brand of it.

Can you put polyester elastane in the dryer?

On a low heat setting, yes, unless the care label says otherwise. High heat can damage the elastane.

Can you use bleach on polyester elastane?

Not chlorine bleach. FabricLink's care guide says not to use chlorine bleach on any fabric containing spandex.

What temperature do you press DTF on polyester spandex?

DTF Database's chart gives 250 to 275 degrees F for 15 to 20 seconds at light to medium pressure for performance fabrics. Follow the transfer supplier's instructions where they differ.
