Five steps to prepare a t-shirt design for a bulk order: artwork, colors, sizes, proof and test shirt
A t-shirt design for a bulk order should be finished, vector or high-resolution artwork with a limited color count, a single clear placement and a size run decided before you ask for a quote. Those four choices set the minimum order, the price per shirt and whether the first shirt off the press matches the proof. This guide covers how to prepare the design, what minimums to expect by print method, what drives the cost and how to avoid a reprint on 24 or more shirts.

What is the minimum order for bulk t-shirt printing?

The minimum depends on the print method. Screen printing usually starts around 12 to 24 shirts per design because each color needs its own screen. DTF transfers are usually priced per transfer or per gang sheet, so a run of one shirt is possible and the price per shirt falls as quantity rises. Most shops add discounts at 24, 50 and 100 pieces. How to prepare a t-shirt design for a bulk order

  1. Start with vector or high-resolution art. A logo or text design should be a vector file. Photos should be at least 300 DPI at the printed size. The vector vs raster guide explains why.
  2. Cut the color count if you plan screen printing. Each color adds setup. DTF has no color limit, so a full-color design costs the same as a one-color design of the same size.
  3. Choose one print size and placement. A full front, left chest or back print each has a standard size. The placement size chart gives the ranges by shirt size.
  4. Decide the size run before the quote. Order the sizes your group wears, not an even split. Add youth sizes if children are involved, and check the youth t-shirt size chart because youth shirts need smaller prints.
  5. Match the design to the shirt color. A dark design disappears on a dark shirt. DTF prints on dark blanks with no white-ink problem, but test the contrast on screen first.

What drives the price of a bulk order?

Four things set the price per shirt: the blank, the print size, the color count (for screen printing) and the quantity. A basic cotton blank costs less than a soft ringspun or a garment-dyed shirt, and a full front print costs more than a left chest logo. DTF transfers cost about $0.05 to $0.10 per square inch at small volumes, and a packed gang sheet lowers that. Use the cost calculator to price a specific job, and read the affordable custom t-shirts guide for ways to cut the total.

How do you avoid a reprint on a bulk order?

  1. Ask for a digital proof and check spelling, size and placement.
  2. Press or print one test shirt on the same blank and wash it once.
  3. Confirm the size breakdown in writing.
  4. Check the transfer against the shirt: a design wider than the chest area will wrap under the arms.
  5. Keep the artwork file, because reorders go faster when the supplier already holds it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for bulk t-shirt printing?

Screen printing usually starts at 12 to 24 shirts per design. DTF and DTG printers often accept orders of one shirt, and most shops offer discounts at 24, 50 and 100 pieces.

What file should I send for a bulk t-shirt design?

Send a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) for logos and text. For photos or detailed art, send a PNG with a transparent background at 300 DPI at the printed size.

How many colors can a bulk t-shirt design have?

With DTF there is no color limit. With screen printing, each color is a separate screen, so most shops price by color and recommend one to three colors for bulk runs.

Is DTF good for bulk orders?

Yes, for orders from one shirt up to a few hundred. DTF handles full color with no setup fee. Above a few hundred shirts in one to three colors, screen printing is usually cheaper.

Can I reorder the same design later?

Yes. Keep your artwork file and ask your supplier to store the proof. A reorder is faster and keeps colors consistent.
