Ordering path by quantity: 1-25 shirts DTF or HTV, 25-100 DTF, 100-500 DTF or screen print, 500 plus screen printing
Customizable t-shirts in bulk cost roughly $4 to $15 each with the blank included, and the order size decides which print method gives you the lowest price. DTF transfers win below a few hundred shirts because there is no setup fee, and screen printing wins above that for one to three colors. This guide shows what each method costs, how bulk pricing works and how to place an order without surprises.

How does bulk pricing work for custom t-shirts?

Bulk pricing for custom t-shirts is the blank cost plus the print cost, with the print cost falling as quantity rises. Screen printing charges a setup fee per color, so the price per shirt drops sharply at higher volumes. DTF transfers have no setup or color charge, so the price per shirt stays flat and only dips on gang-sheet and volume tiers. Rush turnaround and extra sizes can add to either.

Typical cost per shirt by order size

These ranges are DTF Database's standard method comparison, assuming a $4 to $5 cotton blank. They include the blank and the print.

Typical cost per shirt by order size
Order sizeUsual methodTypical total per shirt
1 to 5 shirtsHTV or a single DTF transfer$7 to $12
5 to 25 shirtsDTF transfers$7 to $13
25 to 100 shirtsDTF transfers (or DTG for photos on cotton)$8 to $15
100 to 500 shirtsDTF pressed in-house, or screen printing for 1 to 3 colors$5 to $10
500 or moreScreen printing$4 to $8

Treat these as planning figures. A real quote depends on the blank, print size, number of print locations and turnaround. The cost calculator lets you test your own quantities, and the affordable custom t-shirts guide explains each range.

Which print method suits a bulk order?

DTF transfers suit orders from a handful up to a few hundred shirts, especially with many colors, photos or several designs. A supplier prints the transfer, and you press it, or the supplier presses it for you. See what DTF transfer is if the process is new. Screen printing suits large runs of one to three colors, where setup is spread over hundreds of shirts. It is rarely the cheapest below about 100 shirts. The DTF vs screen printing comparison puts the two side by side. Heat transfer vinyl suits names, numbers and single-color logos on small orders, and not photos or many colors.

For a team order with different names and numbers, DTF is usually the answer: lay every name on one gang sheet and press each one. Use the gang sheet calculator to size the sheet.

How to order customizable t-shirts in bulk

  1. Decide the quantity and size split. Count adult and youth sizes, and add a few spares. See the youth t-shirt size chart and the unisex t-shirt size chart if you are unsure.
  2. Choose the blank first. Weight, fit and fabric change both the price and the result. Our wholesale blank apparel guide compares the common blanks and distributors.
  3. Prepare print-ready art. Send a transparent PNG at the final print size, around 300 pixels per inch.
  4. Ask for a proof and a sample. Order one finished shirt before you commit to the full run, and wash it once.
  5. Confirm turnaround in writing. Ask for the ship date, not just the production time. See the holiday shipping deadlines guide if your date is fixed.

What affects the price most?

The blank is often half the cost, so a $3 tee against a $6 tee changes the total more than the print method does. After that come the number of print locations, print size and color count for screen printing, and rush shipping. Print size matters for DTF, because transfers are priced by area, so a left-chest logo costs far less than a full front.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for bulk custom t-shirts?

It depends on the method. Screen printers often set a minimum of 12 to 24 shirts, while DTF transfer suppliers and heat-press shops usually have no minimum at all. Check each supplier's policy before you design.

Is DTF or screen printing cheaper in bulk?

Below roughly 100 shirts, DTF is usually cheaper because it has no setup fees. Above a few hundred shirts in one to three colors, screen printing usually costs less per shirt. In between, the two are close and the blank cost decides.

How long does a bulk custom shirt order take?

Production commonly takes several business days to two weeks, plus shipping, and rush options cost extra. Confirm the ship date with the supplier, and allow extra time before an event.

Can I order different designs in one bulk order?

With DTF, yes, because several designs can share one gang sheet at no extra setup cost. Screen printing charges a setup fee for each design, so mixed designs are costly in small quantities.

How many extra shirts should I order?

Most buyers add 5 to 10 percent for misprints, late size changes and spares. For a team or event, the extra shirts also cover people who sign up late.

Smaller orders: printed t-shirts online.
