This guide covers Halloween shirt ideas that sell, what to know about Monster Dash and costume races, when glow-in-the-dark transfers are worth it, and how late a shop can take an order and still deliver by the 31st.
What the 2026 NRF numbers say
NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics surveyed 7,889 consumers from Sept. 1 to 9, 2026. The figures that matter to an apparel shop:
| Category | Share of shoppers | Expected spend |
|---|---|---|
| Costumes | 71% | $4.4 billion |
| Decorations | 78% | $4.3 billion |
| Candy | 96% | $4.1 billion |
| Pet costumes | Not stated | $0.92 billion |
Average spending is $115.14 per person, close to 2025's $114.45. NRF's Allison Zeller, vice president of industry and consumer insights, said shoppers are treating Halloween as a priority but are "approaching the season with affordability in mind." That is the case for a costume shirt: it costs less than a full costume, and it can be worn again.
Only 13% of shoppers told NRF they plan to buy Halloween items from local or small businesses, compared with 39% at discount stores. A local shop wins that 13% by offering something the big stores do not: a family name, a school name, a race name, or a design made for one group.
Halloween shirt ideas that sell
- Matching family costume shirts. One theme across sizes: a skeleton family, a pumpkin patch family, or a "boo crew" set with each person's name or role on the back. Families buy these as a bundle, which raises the order size.
- Shirt-as-costume designs. A full-front skeleton, a mummy wrap, or a jack-o'-lantern face turns a plain black or orange tee into a costume. These are popular with adults who want to dress up without renting a costume.
- Teacher and classroom shirts. Teachers often wear a themed shirt on the Friday before Halloween. Original wordplay and spooky versions of school mascots (when the school owns the mascot and approves it) are steady sellers.
- Office and party group shirts. Coworker teams and friend groups order a set for a party or costume contest.
- Trunk-or-treat volunteer shirts. Churches and schools that run trunk-or-treat events order shirts so volunteers are easy to spot.
- Pet-and-owner sets. NRF projects $0.92 billion on pet costumes, and a pumpkin was the top pet costume in the survey. A matching owner shirt with a pumpkin graphic pairs well with a pet bandana.
NRF's top costume lists include characters like Spider-Man and Batman. Those are trademarked and copyrighted, and printing them on shirts for sale is infringement. Use original monsters, witches, vampires, ghosts, and pumpkins instead. The licensed character and trademark guide explains where the line is.
Monster Dash and costume race shirts
Costume 5Ks are one of the biggest Halloween shirt orders, and they run all month. A few examples on the 2026 calendar:
- Monster Mash Dash Halloween Run, Fresno, Calif., Oct. 24. Every participant gets a glow-in-the-dark event shirt and a witch-themed finisher medal, according to the race's registration page. The race also runs adult and kids costume contests and a largest-group contest.
- Monster Dash, Bloomington, Ind., Oct. 24. A 1-mile and 5K event where costumes are encouraged.
- Longwood Monster Dash and the Lake-Sumter State College Monster Dash 5K/10K (Florida), Oct. 31. Both run on Halloween morning with costume prizes.
A Halloween race shirt follows the same rules as any race shirt: event name and year on the front, sponsors on the back, and sizes locked before ordering. The turkey trot and 5K race shirt guide covers the sponsor back and size planning in detail, and many races that hold a Monster Dash also hold a turkey trot a month later.
Two Halloween-specific points:
- Costumes go over shirts. Many runners wear the race shirt under a costume or carry it home. A design that also works as a costume, such as a skeleton ribcage, gets worn on race day instead of saved for later.
- Kids sizes matter more than usual. Halloween races draw families with young children. Fresno's race has three kids' divisions. Plan youth sizes from the registration list, not a guess.
Glow-in-the-dark transfers: when they are worth it
Glow-in-the-dark DTF uses a phosphorescent layer that charges in light and glows in the dark. It fits Halloween better than any other holiday, since trick-or-treating and evening races happen after dark. Fresno's race uses a glow shirt as its main giveaway.
Before quoting glow, know how it behaves. The glow must be charged by light, it is brightest for the first few minutes, and it fades over time. The glow area should be a design element, such as bones on a skeleton or eyes on a ghost, not the whole print. The glitter and glow specialty transfers guide covers how glow transfers are made and pressed, and specialty transfers usually cost more and take longer from suppliers than standard prints.
Blanks and colors
- Black and orange are the core Halloween colors. White ink on black shows the most contrast for skeleton and ghost designs.
- Cotton tees suit family and costume shirts. Press 100% cotton at 300 to 325°F for 10 to 15 seconds, per the DTF temperature and time chart.
- Polyester tech tees suit race shirts. Black polyester is lower risk for dye migration than red or bright colors, but test first. The Sport-Tek ST350 guide covers the most common race tee.
- Size the art for the shirt. Shirt-as-costume designs need a full-front print. The T-shirt design size chart lists adult and youth widths.
Order timing for Oct. 31
Halloween is on a Saturday in 2026, and most parties, races, and trunk-or-treat events happen the weekend before or the day itself. Work backward from the customer's event date, not from Oct. 31:
- Art approval: one to two days.
- Transfer production and shipping if the shop buys transfers: check the supplier's posted turnaround. Ground shipping adds days.
- Pressing and pickup: one to two days for a family or team order.
A safe cutoff for a typical order is about two weeks before the event. Shops that print their own transfers can take later orders. For later-season deadlines, the holiday 2026 shipping deadlines guide lists USPS and FedEx cutoffs for Christmas.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Halloween 2026?
Halloween 2026 is on Saturday, October 31. Many parties, costume races, and trunk-or-treat events are scheduled for that day or the weekend of Oct. 24 and 25, so shirt orders should be timed to the event date rather than to Halloween itself.
How much will Americans spend on Halloween in 2026?
The National Retail Federation projects a record $13.5 billion in Halloween spending for 2026, or $115.14 per person. Costumes account for $4.4 billion, decorations $4.3 billion, and candy $4.1 billion, based on a survey of 7,889 consumers taken Sept. 1 to 9, 2026.
Can I print Spider-Man or Batman on Halloween shirts I sell?
No. Spider-Man and Batman are among NRF's most popular 2026 costumes, but both characters are protected by trademark and copyright. Printing them on shirts for sale without a license is infringement. Original monsters, skeletons, witches, and pumpkins are safe to sell.
Do glow-in-the-dark DTF transfers really glow?
Yes, after they are charged by light. Glow transfers use a phosphorescent layer that absorbs light and then glows in darkness, brightest in the first few minutes and fading over time. They work best when the glow is limited to part of the design, such as bones or eyes.
How late can I order Halloween shirts?
For a shop that buys transfers from a supplier, about two weeks before the event is a safe cutoff for most orders. That covers art approval, transfer production, ground shipping, and pressing. Shops that print in-house, or customers willing to pay for rush service and faster shipping, can go later.
Where this fits in the DTF Database
Halloween is the second stop in the fall run of event orders. It follows Pink Out games and comes before turkey trots and Christmas. The seasonal shirt design ideas guide covers every month, and the seasonal DTF transfers calendar lists order timelines for the year.
