National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is Friday, December 18, 2026, and the weeks before it are full of office parties, school spirit days, and holiday 5Ks where an ugly sweater is the costume. For a print shop, the ugly sweater has turned into a printed product: a crewneck sweatshirt or tee with a faux-knit pattern, a joke, or a group's name, ordered by the dozen for a team or a party.

This guide covers ugly Christmas sweater shirt ideas, the Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run and other holiday races, how to print a full-front "sweater" design with DTF, and when to order.

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is held on the third Friday of December. Office parties cluster on the Friday and the week before it, and many schools hold an ugly sweater day before winter break.

The Jingle Bell Run

The Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run is a holiday 5K run and walk held in cities across the U.S. The Foundation calls it its signature peer-to-peer fundraising event. Participants wear costumes and holiday sweaters and tie jingle bells to their shoes, and local events hold costume contests and team photos. Novartis is the 2026 signature sponsor.

Dates on the Foundation's 2026 event pages include:

  • Pittsburgh: Dec. 5
  • Capital Region, N.Y.: Dec. 6
  • San Antonio, Chicago, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Westchester, N.Y.: Dec. 12
  • Seattle: Dec. 13
  • St. Louis: Dec. 19

Jingle Bell Run teams are a good fit for a local shop. Participants register as teams of coworkers, families, and friends, and a team often wants matching shirts with its team name, separate from any official event shirt. The Arthritis Foundation's name and Jingle Bell Run marks belong to the Foundation, so a team shirt should carry the team's own name and original art. If a team wants the event logo, it should get permission from its local event organizer.

Other holiday races follow the same pattern: Santa runs, reindeer runs, and ugly sweater 5Ks held by running clubs and charities. Many are on the first two Saturdays of December. The turkey trot and 5K race shirt guide covers race shirt layout, sponsor backs, and size planning.

Ugly sweater shirt ideas

  • Faux-knit pattern sweatshirts. A full-front design that imitates a knit sweater: snowflake bands, reindeer rows, and a pixel-style border. Printed on a red, green, or navy crewneck, it reads as a sweater from across a room.
  • Team and office sets. The same faux-knit design with each person's name, or with the department or team name, in the center band.
  • Joke sweaters. Original wordplay about the office, the family, or the job. Avoid song lyrics and movie quotes; both are usually copyrighted.
  • Family Christmas sets. Matching designs in adult, youth, and toddler sizes for a family photo or Christmas morning. They sell well as bundles.
  • Race-day sweater tees. A lightweight polyester or blend tee with a sweater print works better for a 5K than a fleece sweatshirt.
  • Light-up or glitter accents. Glitter DTF on ornaments or stars adds sparkle without a sewn-on decoration. The glitter and glow transfers guide covers specialty finishes.

Keep characters off the shirts. Grinch, Elf, and other movie characters are trademarked and copyrighted, and so are most holiday cartoon characters. Original reindeer, snowmen, and Santa designs are safe. The licensed character and trademark guide explains the risks.

Printing a full-front sweater design with DTF

A faux-knit design covers more of the shirt than most prints, which changes how it is pressed and how it feels.

  • Size it for the blank. A crewneck sweatshirt front can take a design about 11 to 12 inches wide on an adult size. The T-shirt design size chart lists adult, youth, and hoodie widths.
  • Use open space in the pattern. A solid full-front block of ink feels heavy and traps heat. A knit pattern with gaps between the motifs, or a pattern that lets the sweatshirt color show through, is lighter and more flexible.
  • Press fleece longer. For 50/50 fleece crewnecks and hoodies, the DTF temperature and time chart lists 285 to 300°F for 15 to 20 seconds with medium pressure and a cold peel. Pre-press for 3 to 5 seconds to flatten the nap and drive off moisture.
  • Use a pressing pillow under the print area so the seams and ribbed cuffs do not stop the platen from making full contact.
  • Do a finish press. A second press at 290°F for 10 seconds with parchment helps the transfer sink into fleece.

For blank choices, the blank hoodies and sweatshirts guide compares the common fleece styles, and the Gildan 18500 guide covers the most common hoodie.

Order timing

December orders compete with Christmas gift orders and with carrier slowdowns. Work back from the event:

  • Office parties on Dec. 18: take orders through about Dec. 4 for a shop that buys transfers.
  • Jingle Bell Runs on Dec. 5 and 6: orders should be in by mid-November.
  • Anything shipped: USPS recommends Ground Advantage by Dec. 17 for Christmas delivery. The holiday 2026 shipping deadlines guide lists all carriers.

Stock red, green, and heather gray fleece in November. Holiday colors sell through at distributors in December.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day 2026?

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day 2026 is Friday, December 18. It is held on the third Friday of December each year. Office parties and school sweater days are often scheduled on or around that date.

What is the Jingle Bell Run?

The Jingle Bell Run is the Arthritis Foundation's holiday 5K run and walk, held in cities across the U.S. each December. Participants raise money for arthritis research, wear costumes and holiday sweaters, and tie jingle bells to their shoes. Many people take part as teams.

Can you DTF print an ugly Christmas sweater?

Yes. DTF transfers press well on cotton and 50/50 fleece crewnecks, which most printed "ugly sweaters" are. A faux-knit pattern with open space between motifs keeps the print lighter and more flexible than a solid full-front block of ink.

What temperature do you press DTF on a sweatshirt?

For 50/50 fleece sweatshirts and hoodies, press at 285 to 300°F for 15 to 20 seconds with medium pressure, then cold peel. Pre-press for a few seconds first, and finish with a second press at about 290°F for 10 seconds under parchment.

Can I print the Grinch on an ugly sweater shirt to sell?

No. The Grinch and other holiday movie and book characters are protected by trademark and copyright, and printing them on shirts for sale without a license is infringement. Original reindeer, snowmen, Santas, and knit patterns are safe to sell.
