Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, and many towns, churches, schools, and running clubs hold a turkey trot that morning. Nearly every one of them gives out a shirt. For a local print shop, a turkey trot is a predictable order: same event every year, sponsors who want their logos on the back, and a hard deadline that cannot move.

This guide covers turkey trot and 5K race shirt ideas, how to lay out a sponsor back, which blanks hold up for runners, how to plan sizes, and how to time the order so the shirts are ready for packet pickup.

What a race shirt needs

A race shirt has a short list of required parts:

  • Event name and year. Runners collect race shirts, and the year is what makes each one different.
  • Distance. 5K, 10K, one mile, or "fun run."
  • Date and town, usually on a smaller line.
  • Sponsor logos, almost always on the back.
  • The cause, if the race is a fundraiser for a food bank, school, or charity.

Turkey trot shirt design ideas

  • Running turkey. An original cartoon turkey in running shoes, with the race name in an arc above it. This is the most common turkey trot layout, and it works on any shirt color.
  • "Gobble till you wobble" style wordplay. Short food jokes sell well on turkey trot shirts. Check that any phrase you use is not a registered trademark before printing it on shirts for sale.
  • Pie, drumstick, or place-setting icons arranged as a finish line or a race route.
  • Bib-style front. The front looks like a race bib: a box with the event name, year, and a large number. It is a good fit for family and kids' sizes.
  • Retro running stripes. Two or three colored stripes across the chest in fall colors (orange, brown, gold), with the race name in block letters. It looks like vintage running gear and does not depend on turkey art.
  • Family team shirts. Many turkey trots are family events. Offer the same design with a team name line ("Team Johnson") for groups that sign up together.

All of these use original art. Do not use a pro team's logo, a cartoon character, or a brand mascot on a race shirt. The licensed design and trademark guide explains why.

Laying out the sponsor back

The back of a race shirt is where the sponsors go. A clean sponsor back follows a few rules:

  • Tier the sizes. The title or presenting sponsor gets the largest logo at the top. Supporting sponsors get a row of equal-size logos below. Small sponsors share a smaller row at the bottom.
  • Use one-color versions of the logos when the sponsors have them. Mixed full-color logos on one back look cluttered.
  • Get vector files early. Sponsors often send a small JPG from their website. Ask for an AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF file when the sponsor signs up. The vectorize a logo guide covers what to do when a sponsor cannot provide one.
  • Lock the sponsor list. Set a sponsor deadline about a week before the transfer order. Late sponsors are the most common reason race shirt orders run late.

DTF is a good fit for sponsor backs because every logo, in any number of colors, prints as one transfer, with no extra screen for each color. The placement guide gives standard back print sizes by shirt size.

Blanks for race shirts

Runners split into two groups: those who want a performance tee they will run in again, and those who want a soft cotton shirt to wear on the couch after Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Polyester performance tees are the standard for race shirts. They wick sweat and dry quickly. The Sport-Tek ST350 guide and Port and Company PC380 guide cover two common options.
  • Long sleeves suit a late-November morning in most of the country. The Sport-Tek ST350LS guide and PC380LS guide cover the long-sleeve versions.
  • Cotton and tri-blend tees are popular for family fun runs, where few participants are serious runners.
  • Youth sizes matter for turkey trots more than most races because of family participation. The youth Sport-Tek YST350 guide covers one option.

For polyester, press at the transfer supplier's polyester settings, which are lower than cotton. The DTF temperature and time chart lists them. Dark red, orange, and maroon polyester can bleed into white print; the dye migration guide covers how to prevent it.

Planning sizes and quantity

Race shirt orders go wrong on sizes more often than on design. A few habits help:

  • Collect shirt size at registration, and use the registration count by size as the base order.
  • Set a shirt guarantee date. Many races guarantee a shirt in the runner's size only to people who register by a certain date. Order shirts right after that date.
  • Order a buffer for race-day registrations, spread across the most common adult sizes.
  • Offer unisex and women's cuts if the race wants both, and show runners a size chart. The shirt fit and sizing guide covers the differences.

Timing the order for Thanksgiving week

Most races hand out shirts at packet pickup, which is often the weekend or the day before Thanksgiving. Work back from packet pickup, not from race day. Allow time for the sponsor deadline, art approval, the transfer supplier's turnaround plus shipping, and pressing. November is also the start of the holiday rush, so supplier turnaround can be longer than usual. The holiday 2026 shipping deadlines guide covers the rest of the Q4 calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should be on a turkey trot shirt?

A turkey trot shirt usually has the race name, the year, the distance, and the town on the front, and sponsor logos on the back. Original running-turkey art is the most common design. If the race is a fundraiser, many shirts add a line naming the cause, such as a local food bank.

Should race shirts be cotton or polyester?

Polyester performance tees are the standard for races because they wick sweat and dry quickly, and runners reuse them for training. Cotton and tri-blend shirts are popular for family fun runs and walks, where most people will wear the shirt casually rather than run in it again.

How many extra race shirts should I order?

Base the order on registrations by size, then add a buffer for race-day sign-ups, spread across the most common adult sizes. Races that guarantee shirts only to early registrants can keep the buffer smaller, since late registrants get whatever sizes remain.

Can DTF transfers handle a full sponsor back?

Yes. DTF prints every logo on the back as one transfer regardless of how many colors the logos use, so a sponsor back with ten full-color logos costs the same to set up as a one-color design. Ask sponsors for vector logo files so small logos stay sharp.

When should a turkey trot order its shirts?

Work back from packet pickup, which is often several days before Thanksgiving. Allow time for a sponsor deadline, art approval, transfer production and shipping, and pressing. Ordering in late October or early November avoids most of the holiday supplier backlog.
