World Series Fan Shirts 2026: What Shops Can Legally Print
The 2026 World Series starts Oct. 23. What MLB trademarks cover, counterfeit enforcement, and fan shirt ideas a custom shop can print without logos.

This is general information for shop owners, not legal advice. When an order is borderline, ask an intellectual property attorney.
2026 MLB postseason schedule
According to MLB.com's postseason schedule, updated Oct. 3, 2026:
| Round | Dates | Format | TV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Card Series | Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 | Best of three | Completed |
| Division Series | Oct. 3 to Oct. 10 | Best of five | TNT Sports (AL), FOX/FS1 (NL) |
| League Championship Series | Oct. 11 to Oct. 20 | Best of seven | FOX/FS1 (NLCS), TBS/truTV (ALCS) |
| World Series | Oct. 23 to Oct. 31 | Best of seven | FOX |
World Series games are scheduled for Oct. 23, 24, 26, and 27, with Game 5 on Oct. 28, Game 6 on Oct. 30, and Game 7 on Oct. 31 if needed. Games 1 and 2 are played at the home park of the team with the better regular-season record.
The short gaps matter for shops. A team clinches its pennant as late as Oct. 20, which leaves about two days before Game 1. Fans who want shirts for the opener need same-day or next-day production, which is a job for a shop that presses transfers in-house.
What MLB owns
"World Series." USPTO records list WORLD SERIES as a registered trademark of the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, registration number 3455863, registered June 24, 2008. The legal notice on MLB.com lists "World Series" among the marks of Major League Baseball entities and says they may be used only with permission of Major League Baseball Properties, Inc. "Fall Classic." The nickname dates back to at least 1914 in print, but FALL CLASSIC is also a registered trademark of the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball (registration number 3633215) for baseball entertainment services. A shirt that leans on the nickname to sell World Series merchandise is a risk. Team names, logos, and uniforms. Club names, nicknames, cap logos, wordmarks, and distinctive uniform designs are trademarks owned by the clubs and licensed through MLB. That includes the script wordmark styles that fans recognize instantly. Players. A player's name and likeness are protected by rights of publicity and are licensed separately from team marks. A "name and number" shirt for a real player is not a safe custom order.Counterfeit enforcement is real
The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center runs Operation Team Player, a year-round effort against counterfeit sports merchandise. In an Oct. 30, 2023 statement ahead of that year's World Series, the IPR Center said the operation seized more than 180,000 counterfeit sports items worth an estimated $22.7 million in 2022. Homeland Security Investigations has also announced seizures of unlicensed MLB apparel from vendors near ballparks during past World Series, including more than 3,000 items during and after the 2018 Series.
Most of those cases involve vendors and importers, not small custom shops. The lesson for a shop is simple: a shirt with a team logo is a counterfeit if it is not licensed, whether one shirt or a thousand.
Fan shirt ideas that do not use MLB marks
City and neighborhood pride. The city name, the area code, a skyline, or a local landmark. City names are generally not owned by the team. Do not pair them with the team's colors in a way that copies a club wordmark or uniform. Watch party shirts. "Watch Party Crew," the host's name, the date, and a generic baseball graphic. Personalization is where a small shop beats the licensed big-box shirts. Original baseball phrases. Generic baseball language such as "Rally Time," "Extra Innings," and "Seventh-Inning Stretch" with original baseball art. Check any phrase that a specific team uses as a marketing slogan; some club slogans are trademarked. Family and youth baseball tie-ins. The postseason is a good time to sell shirts for local Little League and travel teams. "Fall Ball 2026" and team names that your customers own carry no MLB risk. See the team spirit shirt guide and the custom team uniforms guide. Halloween crossover. With a potential Game 7 on Oct. 31, baseball-themed costume shirts such as an umpire, a hot dog vendor, or a generic "Rally Monster" sell to fans who want one shirt for both. The Halloween shirt ideas guide covers the costume side. How to handle requests for team shirts
Many shops post a short policy and send customers to licensed retail for team gear:
- "We do not print professional or college team names, logos, or player names without a license."
- Offer the city, watch party, and original phrase alternatives above.
- Do not print customer-supplied files of team logos. A customer saying they have permission does not make the shop licensed; ask for the written license.
The IPR Center's own advice to fans is to buy from authorized retailers and look for the official MLB hologram sticker or hangtag. That is a useful line to give a customer who insists on official logos.
Frequently asked questions
When does the 2026 World Series start?
The 2026 World Series starts Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, with Game 2 on Oct. 24. If the series goes the full seven games, Game 7 would be played on Saturday, Oct. 31. All games air on FOX, according to MLB.com.
Is "World Series" trademarked?
Yes. WORLD SERIES is a registered trademark of the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, registration number 3455863. MLB.com's legal notice says its marks may be used only with permission of Major League Baseball Properties, Inc. "Fall Classic" is also a registered trademark.
Can I print a team logo on a shirt for one customer?
No. A team logo on an unlicensed shirt is a trademark infringement whether the shop prints one shirt or a hundred, and the customer's request does not transfer the risk away from the shop. Offer an original design with the city name or a generic baseball graphic instead.
Can I print my city name and a baseball on a shirt?
Generally yes, as long as the design is original and does not copy a team's logo, script wordmark, or uniform. City names on their own are not owned by the team. Avoid combining the city name with the club's exact colors and lettering style in a way that suggests an official product.
How fast do World Series shirts need to be made?
Very fast. The League Championship Series can end as late as Oct. 20, about two days before Game 1. Shops that press DTF transfers in-house can turn watch party shirts the same day; shops that order transfers by mail should keep blanks and stock designs ready.
