This guide covers Veterans Day shirt ideas, what the U.S. Flag Code says about flag apparel, when a shop needs a license to print military insignia, and how to time the order.
Veterans Day shirt ideas
- "Thank you for your service" designs with original art: stars, stripes, dog tags, or a folded-flag silhouette.
- Family shirts for a veteran. A design with the veteran's name, branch, and years of service, worn by family members at a parade or ceremony. These are personal-use orders, which matters for licensing (see below).
- Post and chapter shirts. VFW posts, American Legion posts, and similar groups order shirts for events and parades. Their own emblems belong to those organizations, so the order should come from the post with permission to use them.
- Memorial run and ruck march shirts. Many towns hold a Veterans Day 5K or ruck march. Race shirt rules apply: event name and year on the front, sponsors on the back. The turkey trot and 5K race shirt guide covers layout and sizing.
- School program shirts. Elementary schools often hold a Veterans Day assembly with student choirs or color guards.
- Flag sleeve prints. A small flag on the sleeve reads as patriotic without filling the chest. The flag sleeve trend guide covers sizing and placement.
Spell it Veterans Day, without an apostrophe. That is the official spelling used by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and a misspelled shirt is a reprint.
What the U.S. Flag Code says about flag shirts
The Flag Code is in Title 4 of the U.S. Code, Section 8. Three parts apply to apparel:
- Section 8(d): "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery."
- Section 8(i): The flag should never be used for advertising, and it should not be printed on items "designed for temporary use and discard."
- Section 8(j): "No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform." The same section allows a flag patch on the uniforms of military personnel, firefighters, police, and members of patriotic organizations.
The Flag Code is guidance. It has no penalty section, and flag-print shirts are sold everywhere. But veterans groups and older customers often follow it closely, and some will not wear a shirt made from an actual flag.
A practical approach for a shop:
- Flag-inspired art (stars and stripes in a design, a distressed flag graphic inside a shape, a flag-colored word) is the most common route and is less likely to offend than a shirt that is a full flag.
- A flag patch-style print on the sleeve follows the spirit of 8(j), which allows patches on uniforms.
- Ask the customer. A VFW post may have its own policy on flag designs. A quick question before art approval avoids a reprint.
Military logos are trademarks
Branch names, seals, emblems, and insignia are owned by the U.S. government, and each branch runs a trademark licensing office.
The Army Trademark Licensing Program states that all products bearing Army marks must be approved by the program, and that selling unlicensed merchandise can lead to seizure of goods or legal action. Licensees typically pay a 10% royalty on direct sales plus an annual advance, according to the program's page. Soldiers and veterans may use Army marks on personal, non-commercial items, but product sales and company branding require a license. The Army also says non-profits and veteran organizations cannot use Army marks in their own branding.
The Marine Corps Trademark Licensing Office protects the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. Its guidance allows Marines, veterans, retirees, and their immediate families to use the emblem on personal items such as T-shirts and welcome-home banners, as long as the items are not for sale, advertising, or endorsement. Commercial sale requires a license.
What this means for a DTF shop:
- Personal orders are usually fine. A family ordering a few shirts with a Marine veteran's emblem for a parade fits the personal-use allowance. The customer is the one using the mark, not the shop.
- Shirts for resale are not. A shop listing "Army veteran" shirts with the Army star logo on Etsy or a website needs a license. So does a shop printing branch logos on stock shirts for a store or booth.
- Words and original art are the alternative. A design that says "Proud Army Mom" in original lettering, without the official star or seal, avoids the insignia. Branch names in some styles can also be protected, so check with the branch office before building a product line around them.
- Rank insignia, unit patches, and medals are also controlled. Do not reproduce them for sale.
The licensed design and trademark guide covers trademark basics for print shops.
Colors, blanks, and print
- Navy, black, and military green blanks are the most requested. Heather military green and heather navy are common in 50/50 and CVC blends; press 50/50 at 285 to 295°F and CVC at 290 to 310°F, per the DTF temperature and time chart.
- Add a back or sleeve print for the veteran's name, years of service, or the event date. The print location upsell guide covers pricing extra locations.
- For ceremonies outdoors in November, long sleeves and hoodies sell alongside tees in northern states.
Order timing for Nov. 11
Veterans Day is on a Wednesday in 2026, so parades and community events may be on the weekend before (Nov. 7 and 8) or on the day itself. Schools that close for the holiday often hold their programs on Nov. 10. Work back from the event date: about two weeks is a safe window for a shop that buys transfers from a supplier.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Veterans Day 2026?
Veterans Day 2026 is on Wednesday, November 11. Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11, regardless of the day of the week. Community events and parades may be held on the weekend before, so shirt orders should be timed to the event date.
Is it illegal to wear a shirt that looks like the American flag?
No. The U.S. Flag Code says the flag should not be used as wearing apparel or as a costume, but the code is guidance with no penalties. Flag-print shirts are legal to make and sell. Some veterans and veterans groups follow the code closely, so flag-inspired art is often the safer choice for their orders.
Do I need permission to print the Army or Marine Corps logo on shirts?
To sell them, yes. The Army and Marine Corps trademark offices require a license for any product sold with their marks. Both allow veterans and service members (and, for the Marine Corps, immediate family) to use the marks on personal items that are not sold or used for advertising.
Can a VFW or American Legion post use a branch logo on its shirts?
The Army's trademark program says non-profits and veteran organizations cannot use Army marks in their own branding. Posts can use their own organization's emblem with permission from the organization. A shop printing for a post should ask the post to confirm it has the right to use every logo in the design.
Is it Veterans Day or Veteran's Day?
It is Veterans Day, with no apostrophe. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs uses that spelling because the day honors all veterans rather than belonging to one veteran. Proof the spelling before approving art, since it is the most common error on Veterans Day shirts.
