Three of the biggest US marathons run in the next four weeks: the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 11, the 51st Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 25, and the New York City Marathon on Nov. 1, 2026. Each race draws huge crowds of family and friends along the course, and many of them wear matching shirts with their runner's name. For a shirt shop, spectator shirts are a quick, personal order: one design, a name, and a deadline that does not move.

This guide covers marathon spectator shirt ideas, what you cannot print (race names and logos belong to the organizers), and how to get shirts made in time for each race.

Smaller fall races follow the same pattern. Halloween costume races are covered in our Halloween shirt ideas post, Thanksgiving races in turkey trot shirt ideas, and December runs in the Jingle Bell Run guide.

Marathon spectator shirt ideas

  • "Team [Runner]" shirts. The classic. The runner's name large on the front, plus a short line on the back like "26.2 miles of pride." Families order these in sets, often in kids' and adult sizes.
  • Bib number shirts. Print the runner's bib number large, styled like a race bib. Many races publish bib numbers in the weeks before race day, so this is a natural late order.
  • Photo face shirts. A big photo of the runner's face. They are easy to spot from the course, and runners love them. DTF handles full-color photos well. See our photo printing guide.
  • Original sign-style humor. Spectators already make funny signs. Turn the joke into a shirt: "Slow down, I'm still finding parking" or "You're running better than my Wi-Fi." Write original lines rather than copying viral ones.
  • Mile-marker crew shirts. Groups that meet the runner at a planned spot, such as "Mile 20 Crew," with the mile number large on the back.
  • First-marathon shirts. For the runner, a post-race tee with their name and finish time printed after the race. These can be ordered with a blank space for the time and finished at home with a second small transfer.
  • Bright, visible colors. Neon yellow, safety orange, and hot pink help a runner find family in a crowd of thousands. Suggest them even if the customer asks for black.

What you cannot print on marathon shirts

Race names, logos, and sponsor marks belong to the race organizers and their sponsors. A spectator shirt that copies the official race logo or a sponsor's name is a trademark problem for the shop that prints it, even for a one-off family order. Safer approaches:

  • Use the city and the distance, such as "Chicago 26.2" or "NYC 26.2," in your own lettering, with no copied logo. Even plain race names can be trademarks, so the generic city-plus-distance format is the safest.
  • Use the runner's name as the main design, not the race.
  • For the Marine Corps Marathon, remember that Marine Corps names, emblems, and the eagle, globe, and anchor are protected marks. Our Veterans Day shirt guide explains the USMC personal-use rules.
  • Charity team shirts that carry a nonprofit's logo need that nonprofit's approval. Many charities provide official artwork to their runners.

Shirts for runners vs shirts for spectators

Spectators can wear anything, so 100% cotton or a cotton blend is fine, and standard DTF press settings apply. A shirt the runner will wear during the race is different. Runners wear polyester performance tees, and polyester needs a lower temperature and a dye-blocking approach to avoid dye migration. Our guides to the Sport-Tek ST350, the Port & Company PC380, and DTF dye migration cover the details. Runners also should not wear a brand-new shirt for 26.2 miles without testing it on a training run first, because a stiff, large print can rub.

Many families travel to the race, so the shirts must arrive before they leave, not before race day. Ask for the travel date. Our holiday shipping deadlines post covers carrier timing, and the fast transfer suppliers guide lists shops with same-day and next-day production.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 2026 Chicago Marathon?

The 2026 Chicago Marathon is Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026. The professional races start at 7:20 a.m., and the first wave of runners starts at 7:35 a.m. A 5K runs the day before, Saturday, Oct. 10.

When is the 2026 Marine Corps Marathon?

The 51st Marine Corps Marathon is Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, in Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Organizers call it "The People's Marathon" and note that it is the largest marathon in the world that does not offer prize money.

When is the 2026 New York City Marathon?

The 2026 New York City Marathon is Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026. The course starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and runs through all five boroughs to finish in Central Park.

Can I put the marathon logo on a spectator shirt?

No. Official race names, logos, and sponsor marks belong to the organizers and sponsors, and copying them is a trademark risk for the shop. Use the runner's name, the city, and "26.2" in original lettering instead.

What should a marathon spectator shirt say?

The best spectator shirts lead with the runner's name in large letters, add a short original line like "26.2 miles of pride," and use a bright color so the runner can spot family on the course. Bib numbers and photo faces are popular too.
